The Brandenfels ruins are the ruins of a hilltop castle near the village of Markershausen , a part of Herleshausen in the Werra-Meißner district in northern Hesse .

The castle ruins are in the Ringgau at 452.3  m above sea level. NN high south-east summit of the Schloßberg (central summit 451.8  m above sea level ). Together with other mountains, the mountain forms the southern edge of the plateau of the southern Ringgau , which is flanked by the southern Ringgau foothills , which in turn flatten out in a further layer to form the Werra valley . The Nesse flows southwest and its tributary Schindgraben to the east . Beyond and thus south of the valley of the nearby Werra is the ruins of Brandenburg in Thuringia , which can be seen from afar .

history

The castle was built in the middle of the 13th century. From 1550, the Treusch von Buttlar family was the sole owner of the castle and the surrounding villages.

The castle complex has the shape of an irregular square. To the west, the castle was protected by a 10 m deep ditch and to the north by a shallower ditch . The eastern and southern sides of the castle were protected by the steeply sloping mountain. Entering the castle grounds is prohibited due to the risk of collapse.

Transport links

The castle ruins can be reached from Landesstraße  3243. From the junction of the L 3247 Netra - Altefeld , drive on the L 3243 in the direction of Holzhausen and turn into an unpaved forest path (with a barrier) in a 180 ° right-hand bend. From there you go straight on at the next forest path crossing and turn right 200 m later into a smaller, uphill forest path, marked as Werra-Burgen-Steig Hessen (X5H) (part of the European long-distance hiking trail E6 ) and Wartburg path (X9). Follow this path for about 1,000 m to the ruins.
