Netra is a district and the administrative seat of the municipality of Ringgau in the Werra-Meißner district in northern Hesse .

Netra is located in the Netra Valley in the center of the Ringgau region at about 304 m above sea level. The place is the third largest village in the municipality in terms of population.

history

As early as 1025 Netra was mentioned as "Nederne in Reinicgowe" as an imperial property at that time, when King Conrad II gave the place to the Fulda monastery. In 1073 the lords of Netra were named for the first time, who probably also built the first castle. This they wore in 1318 the Landgrave of Thuringia to feud on. In the course of time, the lords of Netra handed over parts of their property to the Germerode monastery . Parts of Netra were bought by the von Boyneburg- Hohenstein family from the von Netra family in 1366 . .

In 1556 the family of those from Netra died out, the moated castle there and the rest of the property belonging to it fell hereditary to the Hohenstein family, who converted the castle into a moated castle. At the end of the 16th century, there were 86 subjects of various gentlemen in Netra: In addition to a majority of Boyneburg-Hohenstein subjects, there were 18 Germerödische men (subjects of the former Germerode monastery, which was taken over by the Landgrave after the Reformation) as well as some subjects of the Electoral Palatinate who together with half of Röhr, which were given as a fief. Contrary to often repeated but false claims, the village did not come to the landgrave's office in Bischhausen in 1654 , but remained part of the Boyneburg court until those of Boyneburg-Hohenstein died out in 1792 . In 1792 Netra and its castle became state property. The estate became a state domain . In 1818 the seat of the district court in the Eschwege district was in Netra . From 1821 the place belonged to the Eschwege district .

On December 31, 1971, the previously independent place was incorporated into the new municipality of Ringgau as part of the regional reform in Hesse . Today, Netra is the seat of the Ringgau municipal administration. In the community center, which was built in 1976, all of the community's official institutions can be found. A village community center and the fire station until 1993 are affiliated .

The spelling of the place name changed several times over the centuries, depending on how the writer of the respective document tried to translate what he heard into writing: Nederne (1025), Neddere (1075), Nedere circa flumen Nederaha (1140/41), Netre (1255 ), Neythere (1327), Netern (1344), Netter (1495).

As early as 1073, the castle of the Lords of Netra was mentioned instead of today's moated castle. Towards the end of the 16th century, the Lords of Boyneburg-Hohnstein built the moated castle . It is located on the western outskirts. In 1922 the stair tower collapsed; it was renewed in 1957. The building is now privately owned.

There was a synagogue or prayer room in Netra. The half-timbered building with courtyard building was probably built at the beginning of the 19th century. Nothing is known about the appearance of the building. In 1971 the building was demolished because it was in disrepair. The synagogue was at Brauhausstrasse 19, the religious school in Datterode at Leipziger Strasse 45.

Jewish Cemetery

The Jewish forest cemetery has an area of ​​16 ares . In 1985 there were 91 tombstones ( Mazewa ). The cemetery is about 1.5 km south of Netra, near the road from Netra to Grandenborn within the forest on the edge of the forest.

Jakobskirche
