Culture and sights

Buildings

Village church and winged altar

The Lüderbacher church dates from the 12th century with the oldest stone sections in the north-west corner. A choir was added in the 15th century, and in 1785 the building was given a barrel vault . In the years 1837/38 the church was completely rebuilt and the dilapidated transverse rectangular west tower was removed.

The church is home to the only completely preserved late Gothic lamentation altar in Germany. This carved linden wood winged altar, discovered in the attic of the church in 1904, shows the Lamentation of Christ in the middle relief , the apostles on the wings and on the outside, the so-called weekday pages, remains of paintings from scenes from the Garden of Gethsemane and the flagellation.

In 1560 the Treusch von Buttlar had the foundations of the Lüderbach Castle built with attached manor. This was later the seat of the von Capella (n) family.

In 2017 the tower was declared a monument, now bears the name Point India , has been reopened for tourism and is the namesake of the premium hiking trail P21 Point India .
