The Netra moated castle is a stately Renaissance building on the western outskirts of Netra , a district of the Ringgau community in the Werra-Meißner district in northern Hesse , right next to the district road 23 to Grandenborn .

history

When, with Andreas von Netra, the male line of the Lords of Netra died out in 1558, their property in Netra, including a moated castle and court, which had probably existed since the 13th century , fell to the Lords of Boyneburg-Hohnstein , who were related to them . (A Conrad from the widely ramified Boyneburg family called himself von Netra from around 1277 onwards.) The Boyneburgers demolished the existing castle complex or its remains and built a new and relatively large castle in its place in the years 1590–1600. The water of their surrounding moat was diverted through a short canal from the Leimbach, which runs around 120 m further west, and fed back into the Leimbach through a second canal, which then flows around 50 m further west into the Netra flowing south .

With the extinction of the Lords of Boyneburg-Hohnstein in 1792, their - already very neglected - castle and the property belonging to it fell back to the Landgraviate of Hessen-Kassel as a settled fief . The landgrave administration restored the building and turned the estate into a state domain , which existed until 1904.

The castle has a basically square floor plan with a side length of around 20 × 20 m. At each corner there is a diagonally protruding corner projecting , designed as a flanking tower and reaching up to the eaves , with a base area of around 4 × 4 m. Slightly offset in front of the middle of the southwest side is a hexagonal stair tower , the tent roof of which slightly towers over the main building; it partially collapsed in 1922, but was rebuilt in 1957. The built of quarried stone, some still plastered Burgbau itself is three stories and a two-storey Mansardwalmdach of red brick covered. Parts of the first floor were redesigned in the Baroque style. It is believed that the windows on the sides of the corner projections were bricked up due to a window tax introduced during the short-lived Kingdom of Westphalia (1807–1813) . The moat was filled in on the northeast side in 1847 and is still present on the other sides.

The building is privately owned and can only be viewed from the outside.
