Castle Jestädt , a three-winged castle from the 16th century, is located in the Werra-Meissner in the municipality Meinhard and goes to a castle back to the 13th century.

history

The oldest verifiable castle complex to secure a ford over the Werra near Jestädt dates from the middle of the 13th century. In 1561/62 Walrab von Boyneburg-Hohenstein started building a castle on the foundations of the former Talburg after he had resigned as a colonel in French service .

His son Friedrich Hermann von Boyneburg-Hohenstein (1564–1631) had the south wing built in a representative half-timbered structure in 1612 . During the Thirty Years' War the castle was looted and devastated; In 1637 it was renovated and from then on served the Boyneburgs as a noble seat.

After the Jestädter line of the Boyneburg-Hohensteins died out in 1792, the castle and the associated areas fell to the Lords of Eschwege in 1795 . This property was 1802 by a letter of fief Georg III. approved. The north wing probably dates from the middle of the 18th century. Its half-timbered association is plastered. Around 1804, the east wing, the prison tower and the gate were demolished and the north wing was expanded. The last time the castle was rebuilt in 1906 in the neo-baroque style. The mill to the south of the castle was demolished in the 1960s.

After the Second World War, the Eschweges took refugees and relatives into their castle. In the 1970s and 1980s, the castle was temporarily uninhabited.

Todays use

In 1990 the castle was sold and renovated until 1998. It has been inhabited again since 1999 and offers four holiday apartments . Concerts are occasionally held in the inner courtyard and in the hall .
