Old Boyneburg Castle

The old Boyneburg Castle in Wichmannshausen , a district of the town of Sontra in the Werra-Meißner district in northern Hesse , is a former aristocratic seat of a branch of the Lords of Boyneburg . It is located on the northeast edge of the historic village center, immediately east of the village church.
history
From the second half of the 15th century, the various branches of the von Boyneburg family left their castle seats on the nearby Boyneburg , which they held as fiefs from the Landgraves of Hesse , and moved to their estates in the valley. The tribe "Wichmannshausen", it belonged with the tribe "Stedtfeld" to the so-called "white flag" (after their silver-black quartered coat of arms ), whose lines were often just called "the whites" and also with the name form "Boyneburgk" can be found, moved to his estate in Wichmannshausen and moved there into a three-story building made of red sandstone immediately east of the church.
After a new mansion was built on the manor in 1757 , the previous residence of the Wichmannshausen family von Boyneburgk was called the Old Castle .
Now used as a museum
After the von Boyneburgk family had moved to the small castle at their Gut Boyneburgk (formerly known as the Datterpfeife) below the Boyneburg, which was first mentioned in 1460 , the "Old Boyneburg Castle" became the then Bishop's Museum Association in 1977, whose museum building was in Bischhausen in 1977 had previously been canceled for a period of 50 years. The association then renamed itself to "Museum in the Old Boyneburg Castle eV". After renovation and expansion of the building with the help of the association members in the years 1979 to 1985, the "Museum in the Old Boyneburg Castle" was opened for the first time in 1986 with regular opening times from May to September Opened to the public. A museum that visitors can touch is presented to visitors on around 300 m 2 of exhibition space on three floors , because barriers are largely dispensed with. Folklore from the region around the Boyneburg is shown, with an emphasis on depicting rural life in earlier times.
Opposite the entrance to the castle courtyard is a caretaker's house on a massive base.
