history

On August 13, 1891, Adolph Freiherr von und zu Gilsa , the director of the Kassel theater, laid the foundation stone for the palace on the site of an abandoned medieval castle , probably the so-called "Osterburg". The plans for the facility came from the Kassel architect Georg Kegel . When the construction work began, the nursery was built on the Hörnefuß and a villa with outbuildings, which the client initially lived in and was thus able to follow the progress of the work. These progressed only slowly.

In 1897 the entire property was sold to the German-born industrialist Baron von Knoop from Manchester , who had the castle expanded in 1911 with an extension. The main castle was then acquired in 1927 by the Baron von Lüninck . His family owned the entire facility until 1989. Today she still owns the nursery buildings. In 1994 the castle was bought by Theo Becker from Bergisch Gladbach, who died in 2010. He invested in both the building and the access road.

Becker had made it publicly accessible after the building could only be visited in rare cases, and in summer 2009 he opened a café with a local restaurateur. The terrace offers a view of the Werra valley and the Hohe Meißner . The castle has had a new owner since 2018. Since then, it has no longer been managed gastronomically.
