The Schnepfenburg castle ruins are the ruins of a spur castle at 300 m above sea level. NN spur in the forest between the Höllental and the "Kuhbachtal" in the Albungen district and west of the Albungen district of the city of Eschwege in the Werra-Meißner district in Hesse . Only a few hundred meters away in a south-westerly direction are the remains of Bilstein Castle (near Hitzerode ) and a remnant of a further fortified hill system that has not yet been classified as a hill .
The use of the castle is based on ceramic finds in the period between the 12th and 14th centuries, which suggests that it was built in the 12th century. The castle was considerably larger than the nearby Bilstein Castle, which is only a few hundred meters southwest. The Schnepfenburg was probably inhabited by a branch of the Counts of Bilstein .
The main castle had an outer bailey to the west and east , which was separated from it by ditches . Holes with masonry stones indicate a collapsed cellar. There are also remains of a curtain wall , wall and moat remains . A small plateau in a north-westerly direction may have been an access or control function to the road passing by.
