Description and history

Medieval arched moats of the outer and main castle are still preserved from the former castle complex.

It was laid out around 822 to 842 by the Carolingians as a royal palace ( Curtis ; fortified farmyard), with the attack side being secured by ramparts and moats and a fore bailey with ramparts. It was later owned by the von Ermschwerd family . On December 11, 1022, Emperor Heinrich II stayed here when he briefly held a royal court on a trip between Paderborn and Kaufungen . The castle was abandoned in 1170 and its remains were used from 1225 to build the city wall of Witzenhausen.
