history

Imperial certificate for the Kaufungen monastery
Kaufungen Collegiate Church with outbuildings

"Coufa" was first mentioned in a document in 1011 as the place of issue of a document from King Heinrich II. Before this time, Kaufungen was probably an administrative place for the imperial forest (Kaufunger Wald), which belonged to the curtis Kassel. When Heinrich II gave the royal court of Kassel to his wife Kunigunde as a Wittum in 1008 , she moved the royal court to Kaufungen between 1008 and 1011. In the process, the existing administrative buildings were probably expanded into a royal seat. During this time, the St. George chapel, which already had a royal gallery, was built.

In 1017 the royal court was converted into a Benedictine monastery , to which the villages of Nieder- and Oberkaufungen were donated two years later. The Church of the Holy Cross, today's collegiate church in Oberkaufungen, was consecrated on July 13, 1025 .

Four centuries later, around 1430, the first glassworks were built in the Kaufunger Forest . In 1527 the monastery was dissolved, in 1532 it was combined with the also dissolved canonical monastery Wetter to form the “Stift Kaufungen und Wetter” and handed over to the Knighthood of Althess. 1555 took place investiture of 12 trades with the right to reduction of alum - a sulfur-containing mineral, which was important for the tanning, dyeing, paper making, and medicine - around Kaufungen; the small factory was discontinued in 1714. Kaufungen also became the center of copper processing in Hesse, with trade relations with Scandinavia and Belgium in 1580.

During the time of the Napoleonic Kingdom of Westphalia (1807-1813) Oberkaufungen was the administrative seat of the canton of Kaufungen .

The paper mill got its name in 1839: A paper mill was set up in Niederkaufungen. The connection to the Kassel Waldkappel railway network was realized in 1879/80.

The lung sanatorium was opened by the Patriotic Women's Association of the Red Cross in 1900. Today it is a specialist clinic for geriatrics with a day clinic and an old people's home , located in the beautiful Kaufunger Forest. The Lossetal Stadium was opened for sports operations in 1954.

The voluntary amalgamation of the municipalities of Oberkaufungen and Niederkaufungen to form the greater municipality of Kaufungen took place in the course of the regional reform in Hesse on December 1, 1970. A decisive step in improving the quality of life was the conversion of the former open-cast lignite mining area into the Steinertsee leisure and recreation park in 1970 . The Rossgang Mining Museum was opened in 1977 and the Old School Regional Museum in 1986 . After passenger traffic on the Kassel – Waldkappel railway was discontinued in 1985, the route is used again today after the community was connected to the city of Kassel's tram network in 1998 . Until 2006 the RegioTram was also operated on this railway line .

Municipality down purchases

In 1986, the then largest and now oldest political municipality in Germany settled in the Niederkaufungen district . Around 80 people live and work there on an area of around 10,000 square meters around a former farm. The common economy is an important and central principle. All assets and income of the residents - including salaries, inheritance sums or gifts - flow into the joint assets, an additional pension is also shared. Those who leave the community receive a previously negotiated sum, which is usually between five and ten thousand euros and can be adjusted over the course of the period of residence. Further principles are the left-wing understanding of politics, the principle of consensus and the dismantling of small families and gender-specific power structures.

Most residents work in one of their own businesses, such as a daycare center, a vegetable growing collective, an emigrant farm for dairy farming, a carpentry and locksmith's shop, a day care facility for people with dementia, an organic party service and a conference center.
