Peter-Matthias Gaede
Peter-Matthias Gaede (born April 27, 1951 in Selters ) is a German journalist . From 1994 to 2014 he was editor-in-chief of the GEO reportage magazine by Gruner + Jahr .
Life
In 1956, Gaedes von Selters family moved to Niederkaufungen - the father was a teacher and became the principal of the Dorothea Viehmann School in nearby Niederzwehren . After his primary school years in Niederkaufungen, Gaede moved to the Herderschule in Kassel , where he passed his Abitur in 1969. He then studied social sciences at the University of Göttingen , where he graduated in 1978 with a degree in social economics, worked as a freelance journalist for the Hessischer Rundfunk in the Kassel studio for a few months and attended the G + J journalism school (now the Henri-Nannen-Schule) Hamburg , which he visited in 1980 after internships atBuxtehuder Tageblatt ,graduatedfrom Brigitte , GEO and stern .
From 1980 to 1983 he worked as a local reporter for the Frankfurter Rundschau and in 1983 switched to GEO, where he became chief reporter in 1987 and deputy editor-in-chief in 1992.
From July 1994 Gaede was editor-in-chief of GEO and GEO Specials. In 1995 he re-founded the GEO Wissen series , of which he was editor-in-chief until 2007 before he became editor of GEO Wissen . In 1996 he launched the children's magazine GEOlino, in 2002 GEOlino extra and in 1999 the history magazine GEO Epoche . He was editor-in-chief of the children's magazine until 2006, from GEO Epoche until 2005, and since then has been editor-in-chief for the titles GEOkompakt and GEOmini as well as for the books by GEO. On July 1, 2014, he was succeeded by Christoph Kucklick , who took over the editor-in-chief of GEO-, GEOthema- and GEO Special. Gaede has been journalistic advisor to the board of the publishing house Gruner + Jahr since July 1, 2014 . Gaede was a member of the Gruner + Jahr Supervisory Board for three years . During his time as editor-in-chief and publisher in the GEO Group, the number of annual editions of all titles grew from 30 to over 80; GEO journalists have won more than 100 awards.
Gaede was a juror in the main jury of the Henri Nannen Prize from 2005 and resigned his jury mandate in 2012 in protest against the award of a prize to the tabloid Bild .
Gaede has been a deputy board member of UNICEF in Germany since 2018 .
He lives in Hamburg and is married to Christiane Breustedt, former editor-in-chief of the GEO-International magazine series.
