The manor district of Kaufunger Wald is a forest estate district and a municipality-free area in the Werra-Meißner district in Hesse in the Federal Republic of Germany .

The wooded area is located in the northwest of the Werra-Meißner district in the Kaufunger Wald low mountain range, which gives it its name, and is part of the Frau-Holle-Land geo-nature park (Werratal.Meißner.Kaufunger Wald) . Its area is 50.32 km². In the east of the estate district is the Bilstein , which is 641.2  m above sea level. NHN second highest mountain in the Kaufungen forest.

Neighboring communities in the district are Witzenhausen (northeast) and Großalmerode (southeast). The neighboring communities Helsa (south), Kaufungen (southwest) and Nieste (north) belong to the district of Kassel . In the north the area also borders on Staufenberg in the district of Göttingen , the southernmost municipality in Lower Saxony .

Until 1972, the Kaufunger Wald estate was divided between the districts of Kassel and Witzenhausen . As part of the regional reform in Hesse , it was fully incorporated into the Witzenhausen district in 1972, and with it in 1974 into the Werra-Meißner district. The Hessisch Lichtenau Forestry Office and the five forest districts Kaufungen, Bunte Bock, Buchberg, Hundelshausen and Roßbach are responsible for the manor district .

According to the real estate cadastre , the estate district with the community code 636200 is on a par with the communities in the Werra-Meißner district and is divided into three districts:

  • The lion's share of 38.24 km² is in corridors 40 and 50 to 55 of the 2252 Großalmerode district .
  • An area of 8.49 km² northeast of the ridge line from the Mühlenstein ( 607.2  m ) over the Bilstein ( 641.2  m ) to the Great Cap ( 572.5  m ) is added to the corridors 8 and 10 of the 2253 Roßbach district .
  • A last sub-area of 3.59 km² east of the Fahrenbach around the Langenberg ( 565  m ) and its southern foothills Kahlenberg ( 470  m ) belongs to corridor 7 of the 2254 Trubenhausen district .

The community enclaves in the community-free area of the manor district, which are particularly numerous in the east, belong to the city of Großalmerode or the city of Witzenhausen, depending on the location in one of the three districts.
