Wehretal is a municipality in the Werra-Meißner district in the northeastern part of Hesse . The municipal administration is located in the district of Reichensachsen as the center of the municipality.
geography
Geographical location
Wehretal is located approx. 50 km southeast of the north Hessian city of Kassel . It is located between Eschwege in the north and Sontra in the south.
To the north, the terrain drops over the course of the weir , after which the municipality was named, to where it flows into the Werra near Eschwege. In the east lies the Schlierbachswald , in the southeast the Ringgau , in the southwest the Stölzinger Gebirge adjoins and in the west the Hohe Meißner rises up .
Neighboring communities
Wehretal borders in the north on the district town of Eschwege, in the east on the community Weißenborn , in the south on the community Ringgau and the city Sontra , and in the west on the town Waldkappel and in the far northwest on the community Meißner (all in the Werra-Meißner district ).

history
In 1577 the freak Hoheneiche , a widely known deformed child, was born in Hoheneiche . The Renaissance artist Dietmar Merluan made a woodcut of the child.
Incorporations
In the run-up to the regional reform in Hesse , there were some community mergers. On February 1, 1971, the previously independent community of Oetmannshausen was incorporated into the neighboring community of Hoheneiche. Vierbach came to Reichensachsen on October 1, 1971. These two communities merged on December 31, 1971 to form a new community with the name Wehretal . On April 1, 1972, the neighboring town of Langenhain was finally incorporated.
Wehretal is a municipality that, in contrast to many other municipalities in the Werra-Meißner district, has an increasing population. The largest district is Reichensachsen, with around 3500 inhabitants today, which celebrated its 750th year of existence in 2003.

- Thomas Friday (SPD) 46.8%

For the first time since 1952, the SPD no longer provides the mayor.
Partnerships
In June 1992, a partnership with the communities of Bellou-en-Houlme , La Ferrière-aux-Étangs , La Coulonche and Saires-la-Verrerie in the Orne department of Normandy in France , which has been intensively cultivated since then, was sealed.
Furthermore, there has been a partnership with the municipality of Gánt in Hungary since 2007 .
Festivals
Traditionally , the elf festival takes place in the district of Reichensachsen in June . The highlight of the 5-day festivities is, in addition to the dance in the marquee at the sports field on Saturday evening, the big Sunday parade. This has been shaped by the school classes of the local schools and associations for generations. He is also accompanied by several musical trains from Reichensachsen and the surrounding areas. After the parade, all the music trains play in the marquee in front of numerous spectators. The traditional morning pint takes place in the tent on Mondays mornings until early evenings, to which the locals gather, have breakfast and celebrate together. The appointment is usually the third weekend in June.

The town in the Werra-Meißner district can be reached via federal highways 7 (Kassel- Eisenach ), 27 ( Göttingen - Bad Hersfeld ) and 452 (Eschwege - Wehretal).
In addition, the community has a railway stop ( Wehretal-Reichensachsen ) on the Göttingen – Bebra railway , part of the old north-south route .
