In 1577 the freak Hoheneiche , a widely known deformed child, was born in Hoheneiche . The Renaissance artist Dietmar Merluan made a woodcut of the child.

Incorporations

In the run-up to the regional reform in Hesse , there were some community mergers. On February 1, 1971, the previously independent community of Oetmannshausen was incorporated into the neighboring community of Hoheneiche. Vierbach came to Reichensachsen on October 1, 1971. These two communities merged on December 31, 1971 to form a new community with the name Wehretal . On April 1, 1972, the neighboring town of Langenhain was finally incorporated.

Wehretal is a municipality that, in contrast to many other municipalities in the Werra-Meißner district, has an increasing population. The largest district is Reichensachsen, with around 3500 inhabitants today, which celebrated its 750th year of existence in 2003.
