history
The history of the administrative district of Kassel goes back to 1866. At that time, the Electorate of Hesse was annexed by Prussia as a result of the German War and then on December 7, 1868 , it was united with the Duchy of Nassau, which was also annexed in 1866, to form the province of Hesse-Nassau . Within this province, the former Electorate of Hesse formed the administrative district of Cassel , written as of December 4, 1926, Kassel . In 1929 he was assigned the dissolved Free State of Waldeck (former Principality of Waldeck ).
When the province of Hessen-Nassau was transformed into the provinces of Kurhessen and Nassau in 1944 , the districts of Gelnhausen , Hanau and Schlüchtern as well as the independent city of Hanau were transferred to the administrative district of Wiesbaden . The Landkreis Herrschaft Schmalkalden was given to the Province of Saxony .
The administrative district of Kassel was established in 1945 when the State of Hesse was formed as one of three administrative districts (alongside Darmstadt and Wiesbaden ). It included the independent cities of Fulda , Kassel and Marburg an der Lahn as well as the districts of Eschwege , Frankenberg , Fritzlar-Homberg , Fulda , Hersfeld , Hofgeismar , Hünfeld , Kassel , Marburg , Melsungen , Rotenburg an der Fulda , Wolfhagen , Waldeck , Witzenhausen and Ziegenhain .
During the regional reform in Hesse , which was essentially carried out between 1972 and 1979, the districts were merged into larger administrative units and the independent cities of Marburg and Fulda were integrated into the surrounding districts.
With the formation of the new Gießen administrative district in 1981, the now newly formed Marburg-Biedenkopf district was transferred to the new Gießen administrative district. Since then, the administrative district of Kassel has included the independent city of Kassel and the six districts of Kassel , Werra-Meißner , Waldeck-Frankenberg , Schwalm-Eder , Hersfeld-Rotenburg and Fulda with the special status city of Fulda.
