The district of Melsungen in 1905

The district of Melsungen was an Kurhessischer , from 1867 Prussian and after 1945 a Hessian district in the administrative district of Kassel . In 1939 the name was changed to the Melsungen district . Its county seat was Melsungen .

geography

At the end of 1973, the district bordered clockwise in the north, beginning with the districts of Kassel , Witzenhausen , Eschwege , Hersfeld-Rotenburg and Fritzlar-Homberg .

The landscape of the district was shaped by the Fulda-Werra-Bergland with the Spangenberger Senke , the Melsunger Bergland , the Melsunger Fulda valley and the Melgershäuser heights. In addition to the Fulda , the district was also traversed by the Eder .

history

The Melsungen district was formed as part of the Hessian administrative and territorial reform of 1821 from the Melsungen offices , with the Breitenau court , and Felsberg as well as most of the Spangenberg office . However, the three offices remained in existence for a long time with changes as judicial offices in the district. Surrounding circles in the Electorate of Hesse were in the northern district of Kassel , in the northeast of the county Witzenhausen , in the eastern district of Eschwege , in the southeastern district of Rotenburg , in the southwest of the county Homberg and west of the county Fritzlar . Thus the district of Melsungen as well as the district of Homberg in the Electorate of Hesse were without borders to "foreign" areas.

In the district of Melsungen were the three cities Felsberg , Melsungen and Spangenberg as well as 62 villages with a total of 3,738 houses and 24,782 inhabitants in 1822. In 1843 the village of Unshausen was spun off into the district of Homberg , after which the (rural) district of Melsungen comprised 64 communities up to the first municipal mergers as part of the Hessian regional reform in 1971. From 1848 to 1851 the district as the Melsungen administrative office temporarily consisted only of the Melsungen and Spangenberg judicial offices. From 1872 onwards, several independent manor districts emerged in the Melsungen district , which were dissolved again at the end of the 1920s.

At the beginning of the 1970s, the Melsungen district was reduced in size several times:

This reduced the area of the district from 389.01 km² to 365.15 km². A series of further parish mergers further reduced the number of parishes to 22 by the end of 1973.

The district of Melsungen was incorporated into the new Schwalm-Eder district on January 1, 1974 as part of the Hessian district reform . At the same time, further incorporations took place on January 1, 1974. The three towns of Felsberg, Melsungen and Spangenberg and the four communities of Guxhagen , Körle , Malsfeld and Morschen joined the new Schwalm-Eder district from the Melsungen district.
