The Friedberg district was a district in Hesse until 1972 . It was north of Frankfurt am Main and comprised the western part of the Wetterau . The seat of the administration was the city of Friedberg .
geography
At the beginning of 1972 the district bordered clockwise in the north, starting with the districts of Gießen , Büdingen and Hanau , the independent city of Frankfurt am Main and the Obertaunus district and the districts of Usingen and Wetzlar .
history
The province of Upper Hesse of the Grand Duchy of Hesse was divided into districts in 1832. One of these districts was the Friedberg district. It was created by the Grand Ducal Edict of August 20, 1832 from the districts of Friedberg and Vilbel .
After the March Revolution in 1848, the district was dissolved and integrated into the newly created Friedberg district . With the victory of the reaction , however, the Friedberg district was rebuilt in 1852. It now consisted of the district court districts of Butzbach and Friedberg and also included the places Weckesheim , Wohnbach and Wölfersheim from the district court district of Hungen and the village of Staden from the district court district of Büdingen . In 1860 Trais-Münzenberg was reclassified from the Nidda district to the Friedberg district. Through the peace treaty of September 3, 1866 , the Kurhessische Amt Dorheim with the places Dorheim , Nauheim , Schwalheim and Rödgen as well as the Nassau communities Dorn-Assenheim and Reichelsheim came to the Friedberg district. On July 1, 1874, according to the decree of the Grand Duke, the division of the Grand Duchy into districts relating to June 11, 1874, the Vilbel district was dissolved and mainly incorporated into the Friedberg district. After the community of Fauerbach bei Friedberg was incorporated into the city of Friedberg in 1901 , the district comprised 71 communities.
As part of the Hessian regional reform , numerous communities in the Friedberg district were merged between 1968 and 1972. In addition, the outer borders of the district were changed several times:
- On January 1, 1970, Heldenbergen left the district and was incorporated into Nidderau in the Hanau district.
- On December 31, 1970, Büdesheim left the district and was incorporated into Schöneck in the Hanau district.
- On July 1, 1971, the community of Gronau was incorporated from the Hanau district to Bad Vilbel in the Friedberg district.
- On December 31, 1971, Ober-Eschbach left the district and was incorporated into Bad Homburg vor der Höhe in the Obertaunus district. On the same day, the municipality of Ober-Hörgern from the district of Gießen to Munzenberg and the municipality of Berstadt from the district of Büdingen to Wölfersheim in the district of Friedberg were incorporated.
- On February 1, 1972, the communities Blofeld and Heuchelheim from the Büdingen district were incorporated into Reichelsheim in the Friedberg district. On the same day, the community of Leidhecken was incorporated from the Büdingen district to Florstadt in the Friedberg district.
Overall, the number of municipalities in the district decreased to 31 by July 1972. On August 1, 1972, the Friedberg district was dissolved by the law on the reorganization of the Büdingen and Friedberg districts of July 11, 1972:
- The largest part of the district together with the Büdingen district formed the new Wetterau district. At the same time, other communities were merged.
- The municipality of Burgholzhausen vor der Höhe was incorporated into the town of Friedrichsdorf and the municipality of Ober-Erlenbach into the town of Bad Homburg vor der Höhe in the new Hochtaunuskreis .
- The communities Harheim , Nieder-Erlenbach and Nieder-Eschbach were incorporated into the independent city of Frankfurt am Main .

Seat of the district administration
The seat of the newly created district (as in the past also the district administration district) was in the castle from 1832 to spring 1888 (address Burgstrasse 196, today: In der Burg 23). From spring 1888 to September 1920, the seat of the district administration was the house at Bismarckstraße 2, which was later used as the town hall (until the move to Mainzer-Tor-Anlage 6). From 1920 to 1955 the Grand Ducal Palace was used in the castle before the new district building was moved into in 1955.
