history

Early history

In ancient times , several Roman highways crossed at the site of today's Heldenbergen. From the 1st century, the multi-phase Fort Heldenbergen secured the place. Towards the end of the 1st century, a civil craft settlement ( vicus ) with a regionally important pottery production was built next to the fort . After the settlement was destroyed in the course of the Germanic raids in 233, a settlement hiatus was created , which was not closed until the late 4th century when Alemannic settlers from the Bucinobanten tribe settled .

middle Ages

The place was then continuously populated from the early Middle Ages. The oldest surviving mention of Heldenbergen comes from 839 as Helidiberga . The place belonged to the Freigericht Kaichen , which came under the rule of the Burggrafschaft Friedberg in the 15th century .

Since the late Middle Ages there have been two castles in Heldenbergen, the Oberburg and the Nassburg . The latter was demolished in the 19th century, and the upper castle remains (private property).

Early modern age

From 16./17. From the 19th century until 1938 there was a larger Jewish community in the village that had its own synagogue . The old Jewish cemetery on Kellerberg and the new Jewish cemetery on the road to Kaichen have been preserved.

In Heldenbergen, the particular law of the Kaichen Free Court, the Friedberger Police Regulations, applied . In 1679 it was renewed and printed. This is the first time that it can be put into writing. She mainly dealt with administrative , police and regulatory law . In this respect, the Solms land law remained the main source of law for the broad area of civil law . The Common Law was, moreover, if all these regulations did not contain provisions for a fact. This legal situation remained in effect in the 19th century after Heldenbergen was transferred to the Grand Duchy of Hesse . It was not until the Civil Code of January 1, 1900, which was uniformly valid throughout the German Reich , that this old particular law was suspended.

Modern times

With the free court of Kaichen, Heldenbergen fell to the Grand Duchy of Hesse in 1806.

On January 1, 1970, as part of the regional reform in Hesse, the city of Nidderau was created through the voluntary amalgamation of Heldenbergen and Windecken.
