The Roman Catholic parish and pilgrimage church of Maria Gugging , also known as the Austrian Portiunkula Church and the Kaiser Jubilee Church, is located in the pilgrimage site of Maria Gugging , a town and cadastral community of the Lower Austrian municipality of Klosterneuburg . It belongs to the Klosterneuburg deanery of the Archdiocese of Vienna and is consecrated to Mary, Queen of Angels .

Parish history

The town is mentioned in the letter of foundation of September 9, 1083 from Bishop Altmann of Passau to the Göttweig monastery . Up until the Josephine reforms in 1783, Gugging belonged to the parish of St. Andrä vor dem Hagental and then to the parish of Kierling until its own parish was established in 1939 .

Building history

The church was built on the initiative of Franz Völker (1868–1948). For this purpose, an "Kaiserjubiläums-Kirchenbauverein" (Kaiserjubiläums-Kirchenbauverein) was founded on September 29, 1907, and in the following year, the 60th anniversary of the reign of Emperor Franz Joseph , the building site was blessed. The inauguration took place on September 6, 1913. As the patronage feast ( patronage ) Mary was chosen by the angels on August 2nd, which was also that of the Portiuncula Chapel in Assisi. The name “Austrian Portiunkula Church” goes back to Franz Völker, who was so impressed by a visit to Assisi that he gave the new church this name.
