description

Floor plan of the parish church

The church with a mighty north tower is located in an elevated position in the center and is partly surrounded by a medieval stone wall. It is one of two churches in Lower Austria that has an Art Nouveau interior.

The multiple staggered neo-Romanesque sacred building is an extension of a Romanesque chapel from the 12th century. The church was built by master masons Anton Schäftner and Hans Flicker according to plans by architect Richard Jordan between 1912 and 1914.

The nave consists of a four-bay main nave and a two - and-a-half bay side aisle attached to the north. The vestibule in the west with a pillar-mounted organ gallery has three axes . The single-bay choir in the east has a semicircular apse and in the north a passage to the Romanesque chapel. The sacristy is built on the south side of the Chorjoch.

The Romanesque tower was demolished in 1905 and a new rectangular one was built. This has an open upper floor and is connected to the aisle by means of a passage.

Some original Romanesque architectural parts are walled in in the outer wall. In front of the church is a sandstone war memorial erected by Edmund Rothansl in 1924. It depicts an Austrian soldier keeping watch over his fallen comrade.

Facility

The Art Nouveau high altar was built by Eduard Hauser based on a design by Richard Jordan . It consists of a flat, secessionist stone tablet with three niches and the figures of Mary and Child, St. Peter and St. Paul. In the former chapel there is an altar of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The organ was made by the Klosterneuburg organ builder Franz Reusch (1817–1887) around 1870. The secessionist wrought iron grille from 1914 under the gallery is remarkable .
