Arthur Benno Schmidt

Arthur Benno Schmidt (born May 20, 1861 in Leipzig , † April 14, 1940 in Tübingen ) was a German lawyer and member of parliament .

Schmidt was the son of the surgeon Benno Schmidt (1826-1896) and his wife Luise, née Beck. He married Marie, née Benecke, the daughter of the geologist in Strasbourg, Ernst Wilhelm Benecke , and Emilie, née Fallenstein , in Gießen on March 8, 1894 .

Life

From 1867 to 1872 he attended a private school and from 1872 to 1880 the Nikolai-Gymnasium in Leipzig. After graduating from high school, he studied law at the University of Leipzig from 1880 to 1884 . In 1884 he passed the legal trainee examination and was promoted to Dr. jur. PhD. After military service, which he performed from 1884 to 1885, he completed 1885 to 1887 the legal preparatory service. In 1887 he received his habilitation for German and canon law in Leipzig. In 1889 he became a full professor at the University of Giessen, where he was promoted to senior law faculty and member of the administrative court in 1897 . 1900–1901 he was rector of the University of Giessen.

In the years 1913–1931 he was a full professor at the University of Tübingen . During the First World War he did military service as a volunteer from 1914 to 1916. In 1918 he became rector of the University of Tübingen. In 1927 the University of Giessen honored him with a doctorate in theology hc. In 1931 he retired.

politics

From 1897 to 1913 he was a member of the first chamber of the state estates of the Grand Duchy of Hesse as a representative of the University of Gießen . On February 10, 1897, he took his deputy oath . In the years 1897–1909 he was a representative of the vacant position of Chancellor at the University of Giessen and from 1911–1913 a member of the Senate.

In 1920 he was a member of the first Protestant Church Congress in Dresden and in 1922 a member of the Protestant Church Congress in Stuttgart.
