Gerhard Alexander Leist

Gerhard Alexander Leist (born October 17, 1862 in Jena ; † December 3, 1918 in Göttingen ) was a German legal scholar who worked as a professor of Roman and German civil law at the Universities of Marburg (1893–1895), Giessen (1895–1917 ) and Göttingen (1892-1893, 1917-1918) taught.

Life

Paul Gerhard Alexander Leist came from a family of lawyers. He was the son of the legal scholar Burkard Wilhelm Leist (1819–1906), who was Professor of Roman Law at the University of Jena from 1853 , and Julie Leist, b. Müller (1826-1907).

Gerhard Alexander Leist studied law at the universities of Leipzig , Berlin , Jena and Tübingen from 1882 , where he received his doctorate in 1885. jur. received his doctorate . After the state examination, he went to the Higher Regional Court of Celle as a trainee lawyer in 1886 . In 1889 he completed his habilitation for Roman law and private law in Halle and was appointed private lecturer. In 1892 he accepted a position as associate professor at the University of Göttingen . A year later he moved to Marburg . Finally, in 1895, he received the full chair for Roman and German civil law at the University of Giessen , where he taught for more than twenty years. In the academic year 1907/1908 he was the rector of the university. In 1909 he was appointed to the Privy Councilor .

From 1913 to 1917 he was a member of the first chamber of the state estates of the Grand Duchy of Hesse as a representative of the University of Gießen . On March 13, 1913, he took his MP's oath .

Already at an advanced age he was called to Göttingen again in 1917, as successor to Heinrich Titze . During the First World War he emerged as a conservative patriot, among other things as a signatory of the declaration of university teachers of the German Reich . A few weeks after the defeat of the German Reich, he committed suicide by throwing himself in front of an arriving train at the station.

Leist's academic work was based, like that of his father, on Greek and Roman legal history, but focused mainly on current law. Starting with property law , he developed into a specialist in German association law . He also published numerous individual studies on legal history, such as his articles in the Realencyclopadie der classical antiquity , to which his Marburg colleague Georg Wissowa had consulted him.

Gerhard Alexander Leist was with Dora Leist, geb. Wagner (1871–1944), married, a daughter of the geographer Hermann Wagner (1840–1929).
