Burkard Wilhelm Leist (* July 12, 1819 in West / Aller ; † December 31, 1906 in Jena ) was a German legal scholar .

Life

Burkard Wilhelm Leist was the son of Friedrich Wilhelm Leist (1781–1820) and Henriette Leist, geb. Koering (1791–1874). He grew up in Braunschweig and from 1837 studied law in Göttingen , Heidelberg and Berlin . He was most influenced by the legal historians Gustav von Hugo (Göttingen) and Friedrich Carl von Savigny (Berlin). On May 17, 1841, Leist was promoted to Dr. jur. doctorate and habilitation in autumn 1842. In 1846 he was appointed full professor in the law faculty at the University of Basel . In the same year he married Julie Müller (1826–1907), the daughter of the Göttingen philologist and archaeologist Karl Otfried Müller (1797–1840) and Pauline Müller, born. Hugo (1804-1847). On October 28, 1847, Leist moved to the University of Rostock . In 1853 he went to the University of Jena as a full professor , where he worked from then on. In 1861 and 1868 he served as the rector of the university .

Burkard Wilhelm Leist was considered an excellent teacher of Roman law and a supporter of the historical school of Hugo and Savigny. He wrote fundamental studies on Roman and Indo-European law. He has received numerous awards for his work. He was appointed a Privy Councilor and a Knight of the Duke of Saxony-Ernestine House Order and the House Order of the White Falcon, First Class.

His son was the legal scholar Gerhard Alexander Leist (1862–1918).
