The village of Westen is a part of the municipality of Dörverden in Lower Saxony on the Aller .

history

The place was first mentioned in 1055 for a courtyard west as Wensten , Wasten or Westenem . The west castle was built around 1200 . After the von Westen family died out, the Verden bishop Iso purchased the castle in 1219 . In the same century a nave was added and the fortified tower of the castle turned into a church tower.

The Aller ferry Otersen – Westen has been connecting the village with Otersen on the other side of the Aller since the 16th century .

With the Peace of Westphalia in 1648, the territory of the Diocese of Verden came under Swedish rule as the Principality of Verden and part of the Duchy of Bremen-Verden . In 1679 the west office was founded with bailiwicks in Dörverden and Hutbergen.

In 1715, Bremen-Verden was taken over by the Electorate of Braunschweig-Lüneburg . Almost fifty years later, the west office building was built between 1761 and 1762, in the middle of the Seven Years' War .

With the Congress of Vienna 1814–1815, the electorate, which was liquidated during the Napoleonic era, became the Kingdom of Hanover in 1814 . In the Hanoverian administrative reform of 1859, the Office West was dissolved and the Office Verden incorporated from which after the annexation of Hanover by Prussia of Verden district  was.

In 1894 Hieronymus Busemann built the Busemann'sche Mühle between Hülsen and Westen.

With the opening of the Verden – Schwarmstedt railway line in 1905, a railway station in the west was put into operation, which was closed to passenger traffic in 1966. In the 1990s, freight traffic on the Rethem – Wahnebergen route was also discontinued and the associated rails dismantled.

On February 1, 1971, the community Barnstedt was incorporated. On July 1, 1972, the west was combined with four other places to form the municipality of Dörverden.

politics

Heinrich Bodenstab (CDU) is the head of the village.

coat of arms

In the three-part coat of arms on top of a golden background are two turned black bear paws, which refer to the coat of arms of the Counts of Hoya. In the middle two red and silver bars, which can also be found in the coat of arms of the old Bruchhausen. At the bottom, a blue and silver standing cross indicates the church tradition, when in the 15th century the bishops converted the old chapel from around 1200 into a church they called St. Anne's, and where the first Protestant service was held in 1568 .

This coat of arms was not carried by the former municipality of the west.

Culture and sights

  • The office building, built in 1760, served exclusively as the house of the bailiff. After the west office was dissolved in 1859, the building served as a manor house until it was bought by the west community and used as a school from 1949–1966. With the foundation of the Heimatverein Westen in 1995, there was increasing public use by associations, village communities and, since 2004, as a multi-generation house.
  • St. Anne's Church is right next to the office building . It is one of the few churches in Lower Saxony that has a round steeple.
  • In the south of the village in the direction of Hülsen is the Westener windmill, built by Hieronymus Busemann in 1894, at Kreisstraße 14. In the years 1989 to 1991, the Dutch windmill was completely renovated so that it is fully functional with one grinding gear.
  • The second smallest ferry in Germany was put into operation in the 16th century and connects the two villages of Westen and Otersen . After the closure in 1967, the Otersen Heimatverein initiated the rebuilding and since 1997 the ferry service has been running again. The Marie Hoffmann II boat ferry was added to the Marie Hoffmann I hallway in 2000 . Both ferries are operated in an environmentally friendly manner with electric motors, whose batteries are fed by solar energy.

The elementary school in the west is attended by children from all parts of the community with the exception of Stedorf, Dörverden and Barme. West also has a sports club, TSV Jahn Westen , and a volunteer fire brigade.

Transport links

West lies on the K14, which leads via Wahnebergen to the B215 , and on the K15, which connects the west with Dörverden. The Allertal Railway once led from the west to Verden , which is now used as a cycling and hiking trail .
