The Otersen – Westen ferry, which is now seasonally operated, started operations in 1997 after an interruption of almost exactly 30 years to re-establish the connection between Otersen and the west in Lower Saxony via the Aller .

history

Otersen-West ferry connection seen from the west

The Aller ferry Otersen-Westen has been connecting the two villages of Otersen and Westen as a bridge over the Aller since the 16th century. Until 1954, a 20-meter-long loading ferry carried cattle, teams of horses and people. After that, a 4.50 meter long plank boat took over the task of bringing pedestrians and cyclists over the Aller until it was shut down in 1967.

Marie Hoffmann (1997)

It was not until 1997, through the initiative of the Otersen Heimatverein, that a 6 m long deck ship named "Marie Hoffmann", newly built by the AUCOOP / BBV shipyard in Bremen-Vegesack, was put into service.

Marie Hoffmann II (2000)

Due to the enormous success of the ferry, the Otersen Heimatverein decided after three years to commission a larger, 7.50 meter long prism ferry at the Viking shipyard in Wilhelmshaven. It was baptized "Marie Hoffmann II" in April 2000 and has been in use ever since.

Technical specifications

The "Marie Hoffmann II" ferry that operates today has a length of 7.5 meters and a width of 2.70 meters. The open ferry boat is suitable for the transport of up to 18 seated people and bicycles and is loaded and unloaded via a 1.65 meter wide bow hatch. The 8 kW electric inboard motor that drives the ferry draws its power from a 290AH-48Volt gel battery block (8x145AH 12V). The battery block is charged by a solar panel system that is installed on an enclosed boat. In an emergency, the boat can also be brought ashore with oars.

Marie Hoffmann (2016)

In the summer of 2016, the new solar all-round ferry, which is also called "Marie Hoffmann", was completed. It is made of seawater-compatible aluminum and is therefore more durable. The typical regional shape of the pram ferry with bow hatch was largely retained. However, the ferry is 30 cm wider than the previous model. This takes account of the increased transport of e-bikes. The investment was made possible by funding of 65,000 euros from Leader funds for the Aller-Leine valley .
