Franz Joseph von Arens

Franz Joseph Freiherr von Arens (born June 7, 1779 in Arnsberg , † April 1, 1855 in Darmstadt ) was a German lawyer and politician.

Life

Arens was born the son of a merchant and mayor. He attended the Laurentianum grammar school there . After studying law in Marburg and Giessen he was casting a doctorate in 1803 jurisprudence doctorate. He then taught as a private lecturer, from 1804 as an associate professor and from 1806 as a full professor. In 1810 he was appointed to the Church and School Council and in 1818 to the Higher Appeal Council. In 1820 he succeeded his brother-in-law Karl Ludwig Wilhelm von Grolman as Chancellor of the University of Giessen. In 1821 he held the first professorship in law and the seniorate of the law faculty.

In 1821 he became a member of the Central Investigation Commission in Mainz and in 1821 director and 1825 president of the court of the province of Upper Hesse . In 1833 he became 2nd President and in 1834 1st President of the Higher Appeal Court in Darmstadt .

politics

According to the constitution of the Grand Duchy of Hesse , he was from 1820 in his capacity as Chancellor of the University of Giessen, a member of the First Chamber of the Estates of the Grand Duchy of Hesse . In 1838 he was appointed a lifelong member of the First Chamber. From 1834 Arens was a regular participant in the meetings of the State Council . In 1848 Arens was a member of the preliminary parliament . He consistently represented monarchist principles.

Honors

Arens was raised to the hereditary baron status of the Grand Duchy of Hesse on August 25, 1827 . In 1821 he became a privy councilor , in 1834 a real privy councilor.
