Joseph Patrick Carrol Naish (born January 21, 1896 in New York City , New York , USA , † January 24, 1973 in La Jolla , California , USA ) was an American film and stage actor , who won two Academy Awards for Best Supporting Actor was nominated.

Life

J. Carrol Naish, the son of Patrick Sarsfield and his wife Catherine Moran, had Irish ancestors; his great-great-grandfather himself was once an Irish Lord Chancellor . Naish grew up in Harlem and attended St. Cecillia's Academy there . But at the age of 16 he dropped out of school and joined the United States Navy .

Shortly afterwards, Naish fought as a soldier in the First World War , and quickly realized that he had nothing to do with being a soldier. After the end of the war, Naish lived in Europe for a few years in the early 1920s , where he kept himself afloat financially with odd jobs. On board a merchant ship, Naish returned to the USA in the mid-1920s, where he initially settled in Hollywood (California).

Here he began his acting career in 1926, although initially he was only present as an extra and stuntman in black and white films. From 1926 to 1930, Naish also tried his hand at acting on Broadway when he joined the theater company The Shanghai Gesture . However, without achieving the necessary success that he thought he had found in film, Naish returned to Hollywood in the early 1930s.

J. Carrol Naish was one of the most versatile actors of his generation, as he was able to impersonate Mediterranean characters such as Italians and Latinos, as well as Indians, Arabs and even Chinese. Rabbis and Christian clergy were also part of Naish's repertoire. One of his first big box office successes was the war film Sahara , produced in 1943 , for which he was nominated for the first time in 1944 for an Oscar in the category Best Supporting Actor. A Medal for Benny from 1945 was the second film for which Naish also received an Oscar nomination. Although he never received a gold statue in either case, he was awarded the Golden Globe Award in 1946. In total, Naish has appeared in over 200 films, in one of his last roles he was a guest actor in the western series Bonanza in 1968 .

His poor health was the reason why Naish withdrew into private life from 1969. He shared this with his wife Gladys (1907–1987) and their daughter. To see one last time he was in the 1971 horror - Drama Dracula vs. Frankenstein ; Two years later, just three days after his 76th birthday, he died of emphysema .

A star on the Walk of Fame is dedicated to him today .
