action
Sam Tucker is a cotton planter . When his uncle dies and he inherits his farm, he has the chance to be self-employed. He moves to this farm with his family and starts growing cotton. The farm is in a miserable state. The land has not been worked for years. Life for the Tucker family is hard and pathetic, but living independently drives Sam Tucker. He sees himself doomed to success so that he will never have to go to work again in his life. Even when his neighbor Devers refuses to support him, he doesn't let himself get down. Devers is a bitter man who lets his life disappointments out on his fellow men. It is only when they both realize that fishing is a mutual love that Tucker and Devers become friends. Tucker is getting on with his work. The hope of success is suddenly real. A mighty storm destroys the entire harvest. Sam is devastated and wants to throw everything. He is willing to work in a factory again and to go back into self-employment. But his family knows that this would destroy the family. She can convince him to try another fresh start.
