action

The Argentine horse breeder Don Diego sends his son Ricardo Quintano to New York to sell some horses there. Don Diego forbids his son from doing business with Binnie Crawford or anyone else in the Crawford family. Binnie's brother Willis had betrayed Don Diego years earlier.

Ricardo arrives in New York and makes the acquaintance of Glenda, who wants to buy a couple of horses from him. He soon falls in love with Glenda, but finds out that she is a niece of Binnie Crawford. He refuses to sell and fled back to his home country. Glenda is confused and follows him, accompanied by Binnie, to Argentina. There the two meet again. It is clear to everyone that Ricardo and Glenda belong together. Ricardo introduces Glenda to his father as Miss Cunningham.

Glenda encourages Ricardo to take part in a jumping competition with his horse Furioso. Don Diego, who doesn't like Ricardo's participation, learns of Glenda's true identity at a horse show. From now on he turns away from his son. He gets even angrier when Furioso refuses to jump at the competition. Ricardo now wants to do everything possible to restore his father's reputation. He takes part in an important race with Furioso and wins it. Don Diego's views on horses and Glenda change.

production

It was the first lead role for Betty Grable on Fox. Carmen Miranda made her debut in a US film.

The tap dance duo Nicholas Brothers had a guest appearance . The costumes were made by Travis Banton .

criticism

The lexicon of international films described the film as a brightly colored film musical with fast-paced women, horses and melodies - but only moderately amusing.

Bosley Crowther of the New York Times wrote that the story was silly nothing. Without the beautiful Betty Grable and Carmen Miranda, the film is just an extensive color musical that is held together by a few brightly colored numbers.

Dave Kehr of the Chicago Reader called the film were loud, vulgar, ridiculous and irresistible entertaining.

Awards

The film received three Oscar nominations in 1941 . Leon Shamroy and Ray Rennahan were nominated for Best Cinematography (Color) and Richard Day and Joseph C. Wright for Best Production Design (Color) . The third nomination went to the theme song Down Argentine Way by Harry Warren (melody) and Mack Gordon (lyrics) in the Best Song category .
