Karl Tunberg

Karl Owen Tunberg (born March 11, 1907 in Spokane , Washington , † April 3, 1992 in London ) was an American screenwriter and film producer .

Life

Together with his mother Cenna and his older brother William, Karl Tunberg moved from his hometown in Washington to California at a young age. They lived in Santa Barbara for a while before finally settling in Los Angeles . There Tunberg attended Hollywood High School and the University of Southern California . He first wrote short stories and published a novel in 1935 under the title While the Crowd Cheers . From 1937 he was under contract as a screenwriter at 20th Century Fox , where he mostly wrote screenplays for film musicals with other authors , such as for The Queen of Broadway (1942) with Rita Hayworth and Victor Mature . In 1942 he moved to Paramount Pictures , where he worked until 1948. In the years that followed, he worked as a freelance writer and produced a number of films in which he was involved as a writer, including Jean Negulesco's comedy French Beds (1959) with Deborah Kerr .

From 1950 to 1951 he was President of the Writers Guild of America , which nominated him for the 1960 Writers Guild of America Award for the screenplay of William Wyler's classic Ben Hur (1959) . Although Christopher Fry , Maxwell Anderson , S. N. Behrman and Gore Vidal as authors instrumental in the script of Ben Hur were involved, only Tunberg was called in the opening and closing credits of the film and only one of the authors for the Oscar in the category Best Adapted Screenplay nomination . From 1972 Tunberg wrote scripts for American television series such as Bonanza . In 1978 Karl Tunberg withdrew from the film business.

Tunberg was married three times and had five children. Together with his son Terence Tunberg he wrote the books Master of Rosewood (1980) and The Quest of Ben Hur (1984). He was in the Golders Green Crematorium in London cremated , where his ashes is located.
