Sidney Lanfield
Sidney Lanfield (born April 20, 1898 in Chicago , † June 20, 1972 in Marina del Rey , California ) was an American film director .
Life
Lanfield began his professional career as a jazz musician and vaudeville entertainer and moved to Hollywood in 1926 , where he was initially contracted as a writer by the Fox Film Corporation . In 1930 he made his directorial debut with El barbero de Napoleón and henceforth specialized in romantic comedies . His most successful film was, however, the gloomy detective film Hound of the Baskervilles ( The Hound of the Baskervilles , 1939), in which Basil Rathbone for the first time as Sherlock Holmes occurred. After Lanfield for Columbia Pictures , the movie musical empire you'll never ( You'll Never Get Rich , 1941) with Fred Astaire and Rita Hayworth had turned and was able to another success, he was selected by Paramount Pictures permanently employed. There he directed a number of films with comedian Bob Hope . In the 1950s, Lanfield was one of the first directors who turned to television and directed numerous series by the end of his career, including The Addams Family (1964–1966).
Lanfield was married to film actress Shirley Mason from 1927 until his death . He died in 1972 at the age of 74 and was buried in the Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery in Los Angeles .
