Irving Cummings , actually Irving Caminsky (born October 9, 1888 in New York City , New York , † April 18, 1959 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American actor and director .

Life

Irving Cummings began as a stage actor on Broadway in the Lillian Russell drama company before moving to film in 1909. Here he worked with well-known producers and actors such as Cecil B. DeMille and Buster Keaton . From 1922 he also worked as a director. In 1928 he shot the western In Old Arizona with Raoul Walsh , for which he received an Oscar nomination for best director in 1930 . In the 1930s and 1940s, he directed some of the most famous musicals in cinema history for 20th Century Fox, starring Betty Grable , Bob Hope , Alice Faye and Shirley Temple . In 1941, for example , the musical Louisiana Purchase, composed by Irving Berlin , was created using the elaborate technicolor color process and received two Academy Awards in 1942. In 1951 he directed Double Dynamite with Jane Russell , Groucho Marx and Frank Sinatra for the last time .

In 1959, Irving Cummings died of heart failure at the age of 70 . His grave is in the Hollywood Forever Cemetery in Los Angeles . From 1917 until his death he was married to the actress and screenwriter Ruth Sinclair (later Cummings; * 1894 , † 1984 ).
