In Old Arizona is a 1928 American western directed by Irving Cummings . The screenplay is based on the story The Caballero's Way by O. Henry .

action

Cisco Kid is a crook who takes particularly dramatic thefts and dangerous actions. He is known for that, but always only one step away from prison. Sergeant Mickey Dunn is his staunchest pursuer.

The reputation of the Cisco Kid becomes particularly clear when he raids a carriage station and only needs to fire two warning shots to get hold of the box. His relationship with the Mexican Tonia Maria is almost doomed, because his lover works with Sergeant Dunn. It comes to the final showdown with Dunn, at which Tonia Maria is also present, who is accidentally shot by Dunn. Cisco Kid laughs as he rides into the sunset.

background

The first western to be shot as a sound film was in Old Arizona . It is also the first sound film with outdoor recordings. Originally, Raoul Walsh was supposed to direct and also play the lead role of the Cisco Kid. But a traffic accident in which he lost an eye forced the studio to hire another actor. Buddy Roosevelt was supposed to play Cisco Kid, but shortly after filming began, he broke his leg. Eventually Warner Baxter was signed.

The film premiered on December 25, 1928 in Los Angeles. The film has not yet been shown in Germany.

Baxter played the role of the Cisco Kid twice, in 1931 in The Cisco Kid (again directed by Irving Cummings and with Edmund Lowe as Sergeant Dunn) and in 1939 in Return of the Cisco Kid by Herbert I. Leeds.

Reviews

Variety felt that the climax lifted the film above the usual uphill and downhill work. Mordaunt Hall of the New York Times said the film was intelligently made up. The really entertaining film is a further advance of the sound film.

Awards

At the second Academy Awards in April 1930 , Warner Baxter was awarded the Oscar for Best Actor . There were four other nominations in the categories of Best Film , Best Director , Best Cinematography and Best Screenplay .
