Jan Gunnar Hoff (born October 22, 1958 in Bodø ) is a Norwegian jazz pianist and composer.

Life

Hoff studied at the Trondheim Conservatory with Terje Bjøklund and later took private lessons with Harold Danko (1987) and Django Bates (1994) and with Andy Laverne in New York (2000). He began his musical career in a piano trio and as a sideman of Jon Christensen . In 1982 he toured with Arild Andersen and Nils Petter Molvær , in 1987 he took part in a Norwegian all-star combo in the performance of a composition by Jan Garbarek for the Federation of Norwegian Jazz musicians .

In 1992 Hoff made his debut at the Harstad Festival with the performance of his own composition, a four-part suite for piano trio and percussion, which formed the basis of his first own album Syklus on the Odin label . He heads the Jan Gunnar Hoff Group (with Audun Kleive , Knut Riisnæs and Bjørn Kjellemyr and since 1995 with Tore Brunborg ), which performed at various festivals in Norway and Great Britain, gave concerts in Paris in 2000 and worked with Pat Metheny at the 2001 Molde Festival .

With the Trio Nord , Hoff accompanied musicians like John Surman and Karin Krog . He played in sessions with Chick Corea and Joanna MacGregor and in the bands of Kenwood Dennard (1999) and Martin France (2000). In 2004 he toured with Cæcilie Norby and Lars Danielsson . In 2005 he wrote free flow songs for the Vossajazz Festival, which were performed with the Portuguese singer Maria João , with whom he subsequently performed in France. In 2006 he worked with Mike Stern , for whom he composed the piece Magma .

For the jazz fair Meditatus , Hoff received the Edvard Grieg Prize as a composer in 2006. The work was released in 2007 as part of a recording with Bodø Domkor . In 2013 he was awarded the Buddyprisen , Norway's most important jazz prize.
