Cæcilie Norby (born September 9, 1964 in Frederiksberg ) is a Danish singer who is now primarily active in the jazz sector.

Live and act

Norby's parents, the mother an opera singer, the father a composer, encouraged Norby's musical development at an early age. Among other things, she attended the "Sankt Annae Gymnasium", which is known as a singing school. In 1982 Norby turned to pop, founded the group "Street Beat", but in 1983 also worked as a singer in the fusion band "Frontline", which was awarded the Ben Webster Prize . She achieved her first commercial success from 1985 with the pop-rock group "OneTwo", of which she belonged alongside Nina Forsberg until 1993 and with which she achieved several radio hits. The albums are sold more than 250,000 times in Denmark and are very well placed in the local music charts .

After leaving "OneTwo", Norby concentrated on jazz and worked as a singer with Ray Brown , Mike Stern , John Scofield and Dianne Reeves . Her jazz debut "Cæcilie Norby" (1995) with contributions from guest soloists like Chick Corea was the first Blue Note album by a Dane. It developed into the Danish “Jazz Album of the Year”, but also sold well in Japan. Mike and Randy Brecker , Lars Danielsson and Terri Lyne Carrington played on the follow-up album "My Corner of the Sky" . After selling more than seventy thousand copies, Norby was considered one of the ten most popular jazz singers of 1996. Her third album, "Queen of Bad Excuses", was created in close collaboration with Lars Danielsson and was released simultaneously in Australia, South Africa and Japan. The fourth album "First Conversation" (2002) has crossover trains; there her voice is embedded in strings and the playing of Carsten Dahl and Jon Christensen . This was followed by the live album "London / Paris" (2003). At the JazzBaltica -Festival 2004 she appeared with Nils Landgren , Ulf Wakenius (guitar), Lars Danielsson (bass) and Wolfgang Haffner (drums), as well as in another concert with Dianne Reeves. In the same year there was a one-time reunion of OneTwo, when she performed live with Nina Forsberg and accompanying band with the hit " Midt i en drøm " on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the Skanderborg Festival .

In 2006 she met Curtis Stigers in the same place . The album “Slow Fruit” (2005) was created in collaboration with Curtis Stigers and Lars Danielsson, on which Randy Brecker , Ulf Wakenius , Carsten Dahl and the Danish Radio Concert Orchestra participated. The album sold more than twelve thousand times in Germany.

In 2007 she started OneTwo again with Nina Forsberg , performed with her pop / rock classics at the Skanderborg Festival in the same year, and from April 2008 toured Denmark with the One-Two repertoire.

Norby, who has meanwhile been nominated ten times for the Danish Music Awards , is regarded in the Scandinavian press as the grande dame of jazz singing in Denmark.
