Grande dame

Grande Dame (from French) refers to a stage character who embodies a wealthy, worldly experienced woman.

In the cultural life of society one calls a grande dame an older artist who has become an institution of her own and an unmistakable character because of her life's work, her wealth of experience and her inspiring dynamism. The grande dame has achieved considerable prominence in a certain, definable area and shaped generations.

The title of Grande Dame is not conferred by any institution; the grande dame is not chosen unless by the esteem of colleagues and the audience .

Grande Dame is a female title, the male counterpart is the Grand Seigneur .
