The Neue Nikolaischule Leipzig (officially Neue Nikolaischule - grammar school of the city of Leipzig , Latin Schola Nikolaitana Lipsiensis ) is a grammar school in Leipzig-Stötteritz , Saxony . It was founded as the Nikolaischule in 1512. The Nikolaischule is one of the oldest citizens' schools in Germany. It was the first public school and Latin school in the city of Leipzig. Its name refers to the Nikolaikirche , in the churchyard of which the first school building was located.

school

In the course of history, the institution of the Nikolaischule was previously located in four school buildings. The first school building was located on the Nikolaikirchhof next to the Nikolaikirche from 1512 to 1872 , today renovated as the Alte Nikolaischule after 1990 and used culturally and gastronomically. In 1872 the school moved to Königsstraße (today Goldschmidtstraße and Stephanstraße). Today there is a hotel on this site. After it was destroyed in the course of the Second World War , the school was relocated to Heinrichstrasse in 1947. In 1958, the secondary school section was separated and in 1995 the school on Heinrichstrasse was finally closed and re-established in the current building on Schönbachstrasse as the New Nikolaischule, by renaming the Schönbachstrasse grammar school located there and replacing the old Nikolaischule. The Neue Nikolaischule is located in Stötteritz , a district in the south-east of Leipzig, at the intersection of Schönbachstrasse and Naunhofer Strasse. In the north, the gardens of the houses on Egon-Erwin-Kisch-Weg border the school wall. In the south there is the school yard with two side gates to Schönbachstraße in the east and Naunhofer Straße in the west and with a main gate to a small green area and the intersection in the south. The wedge-shaped area facing south is surrounded by a school wall, on which the many bicycle racks are also attached. The inner ring around the school yard is closed by a row of large plane trees on the edge. The courtyard is symmetrical. In the middle, a memorial stone for a high school diploma from 1998 is embedded in the stone slabs. The former smokers' yard is currently being converted into a "quiet yard". The school building, embedded in the green of the trees, is approx. 30 meters high, 17 meters wide and 50 meters long (with the old ATH gym and the MZH multi-purpose hall). It consists of a middle part and two wings attached to it. The building is plastered in white with green doors and windows.

In front of the Neue Nikolaischule building on Naunhofer Straße there is a relief of the New Testament writer Caspar René Gregory .

The inside of the building has already been partially renovated. In 1997 a partial renovation was carried out. From 2012 to 2013 the old gym, which had to be closed for physical education in 2009, will be renovated. The entire school building will be renovated from 2013 to 2017. Above all, fire protection measures are taken. All rooms are networked with one another. The school has technical rooms with modern equipment, two sports halls of its own (one is currently being renovated) and a double sports hall of the City of Leipzig in Thiemstraße and the sports field of the Allgemeine Turnverein Leipzig 1845 eV (ATV) as well as the parks at the Völkerschlachtdenkmal and Schönbachstraße are used . The school has a school library and, with the multi-purpose hall, a technically modern and diverse event room.

Every year in the last week of school, the school organizes a school music day and a sports and game day or, since 2007, a sports and swimming day. The annual Christmas ball has been a special tradition since 2005. In addition, subject-related lessons take place in January, during which the pupils deal with a topic in certain subjects for one week. In the 9th grade, the ski camp takes place this week. Another tradition is a Christmas and a spring concert in the MZH every year. From 2011, a Santa Claus week will be introduced, which will follow on from the project week that ran until 2007. This week includes various project days and a science day.

The Neue Nikolaischule is a school with a high profile in the natural sciences and social sciences. The all-day school program has been expanded step by step since 2006. This means that there is now a wide selection of working groups and some funding opportunities. The Nikolaischule has one of the best high school graduation rates in Saxony (over 98%) and is one of Saxony's best schools.

The Neue Nikolaischule works closely with companies and organizes professional orientation events. Every school year, the Euroschulen Leipzig's job fair takes place here. The Barmer Ersatzkasse, the Sparkasse Leipzig, BMW and Porsche often appear as sponsors. Deutsche Bank has also been a partner of the Nikolaischule since 2011.

At the moment (as of 2013) 709 students (22 classes in lower secondary level) are taught by 53 teachers at the school. The students call themselves Nikolaitans . The current director is Heiner Wulfert. The deputy is Andreas Polster.

In 2009 the project 500 years of the Nikolaischule started . A group of students is researching the history of the old and new Nikolaischule and the Nikolaikirchhof, exhibitions have also been prepared and a celebration on the 500th anniversary of the Nikolaischule's founding in 2012. The Nikolaischule is the second oldest school in Leipzig (after the Thomasschule in Leipzig ) . Nevertheless, it was the first middle school and Latin school in Leipzig. The motto is "Tradition - Competence - Perspective".

In the school year 2011/2012, the Neue Nikolaischule also ran a branch office Neue Nikolaischule II in the building of the former Mommsen grammar school in Bornaische Straße 104. A new grammar school was founded there in the 2012/2013 school year. Since the school would have too few students in the first school year with only three 5th grades to hire extra teachers, the school is run for one year by the school management of the Neue Nikolaischule. The New Nikolaischule thus had six 5th grades in the 2011/2012 school year, all of which initially visited the branch.

Overall, the Neue Nikolaischule recorded a strong increase in pupils. In 2004 only two 5th grades were enrolled. In 2005, 2006 and 2007 there were three each. In 2008 five classes started school. In the two following years, 2009 and 2010, five classes should have been enrolled, but due to the lack of specialist rooms at the school, only four were approved by the city. In the 2011/2012 school year, six classes will visit the branch, of which only three will remain permanently at the Neue Nikolaischule. According to the Saxon Education Agency, the Neue Nikolaischule was in fourth place among the schools with the most newly enrolled students in the city of Leipzig in 2011. Overall, however, no other school in town had so many students applied. However, not all applicants could be accepted. The three places in front of the Nikolaischule are the Thomasschule, the Kant-Gymnasium and the Leibniz-Gymnasium. Reasons for the enormous popularity of the school, apart from the excellent results of the Abitur exams and the pass rates, include the numerous all-day offers, school events and festivals as well as the location.

The Neue Nikolaischule has so far had two partner schools. There is close cooperation with the Reclam Gymnasium and the Humboldt School. For example, pupils from the two schools are also taught at the Nikolaigymnasium if certain courses in upper secondary level fail. The advanced courses in history and physics from the Nikolaischule and Humboldtschule take place together in the Nikolaischule. Conversely, the Nikolaitaner attend the advanced courses in chemistry and art at the Humboldt School. Teachers are also sent to partner schools if there is a shortage of teachers, and vice versa. In the 2012/2013 school year, the new school was added to the current branch.

Numerous projects and all-day offers are possible at the Neue Nikolaischule. Student exchange trips with France are also possible. In addition to normal class and course trips, the 9th grade ski camp takes place every year. There the students go skiing with their teachers and some special ski instructors in the South Tyrolean Alps. There are some all-day offers, so-called working groups. They range from simple hobbies, such as the theater work group or the athletics work group, to more demanding work groups and work groups that are very important for school in general. This includes the Homepage-AG, which designs and updates the school's website. This also includes the working group for technology, film and event facility management (in short: Technik-AG). This working group takes care of the technical implementation and design of school celebrations, such as the Christmas ball and the music day. At the same time, she helps to plan these events and also takes care of the school's technical equipment that is necessary for teaching. There are also smaller and larger film projects. The members are the only pupils in the school who are authorized to give instructions to classmates (and in special cases to teachers). The Nikolaischule also offers a large and varied package of all-day offers with groups such as weight training, calligraphy, video and tutoring groups, through which students can improve and show their individual skills and at the same time actively participate in school activities. The school management tries to involve the students as much as possible in the events and to let them make their own decisions. For example, the teaching system is decided by the student council. The school thus trains its students not only to be spiritually but also politically active.

The New Nikolaischule Leipzig runs two student companies. The student company "Der CLUB", a catering company that not only takes care of the students, but also caters for large school events and even city administration events, is an independent company that is run by students under the supervision of a teacher. Another company is "Students Lead Students", owned by the city tourism company. There pupils are trained to become city guides.

history

Old Nikolaischule

On March 11, 1395, the City Council of Leipzig received a decree from Pope Boniface IX. the power of attorney to build a city school on the Nikolaikirchhof and its surroundings ( 51 ° 20 ′ 26 ″  N , 12 ° 22 ′ 43 ″  E ). The planning of a school on the Nikolaikirchhof was first mentioned in a document in 1490. The name "Schola Nikolaitana" carried over as a nickname and later the official name to the students studying there: "The Nikolaitaner" .

On September 26, 1510, the council renewed the decision to build a school, which was completed two years later. As early as 1530 the school had to be expanded in order to accommodate the rapidly growing number of students.

The plague epidemic during the Thirty Years' War (1638-1639) led to the school being temporarily closed.

Since the building became too narrow in 1872, the school moved to a larger domicile on Königstraße (today Goldschmidtstraße). The “Alte Nikolaischule” café is now located in the building on the Nikolaikirchhof. On the night of the bombing from December 3rd to 4th, 1943, the school building on Königstrasse was destroyed. The students were brought together in the new Heinrichstrasse building.

The last Abitur examination at the Alte Nikolaischule was held in 1958. On September 1, 1958, the secondary school part of the Nikolaischule was combined with the Humboldt secondary school in Möbiusstrasse under their roof and name. Until 1995, the primary school part of the Nikolaischule was still run as a POS or middle school . After that it was replaced by the New Nikolaischule, some students and teachers switched from the old to the New Nikolaischule.

Throughout history, famous personalities attended the school, including Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz (from 1658 to 1661), Christian Thomasius (from 1665 to 1670), Johann Gottfried Seume (from 1779 to 1780), Karl Liebknecht (from 1882 to 1890) and Richard Wagner .

The rectors were Jakob Thomasius and Johann Jacob Reiske .

The building of the "New Nikolaischule" was built from 1914 to 1916 on Schönbachstrasse in Thonberg (the street was moved to the Stötteritz district after the fall of the Wall) ( 51 ° 19 ′ 4 ″  N , 12 ° 24 ′ 47 ″  E ). The classrooms were initially equipped with gas lighting, but after some renovations were given electric light like all the other useful rooms in the school. A year later, bathrooms were also set up.

During the Second World War , lessons were often canceled due to frequent bombings or had to be held in shifts in a few classrooms due to poor heating options. The first air raid on Leipzig on December 4, 1943 severely damaged the building and the gym, and individual rooms were burned out.

In 1959, the 28th and 30th high schools were combined into one school and continued under the name 28th high school. In 1974 this school was divided again and renamed the 28th and 128th high school. Four years later, the 128th secondary school was named " Egon Erwin Kisch " and the 28th secondary school was named " Nikolai Ostrowski ".

After the two secondary schools were reunified in 1990, they were initially named “Gymnasium Schönbachstraße” in 1992, and the school building was included in the list of monuments of the city of Leipzig by the State Office for Monument Preservation. In the course of this, the building received an exterior renovation as a conservation measure. From 2001 to 2003, an extension was built based on designs by the Leipzig architects Schulz und Schulz , which received a recognition award at the 2003 Architecture Prize of the City of Leipzig .

The grammar school received its final name in 1995 with the name "Neue Nikolaischule Leipzig". The Neue Nikolaischule was founded under this name in 1995 after the Nikolaischule Heinrichstraße no longer existed and replaced the old Nikolaischule.

In 2012 the Nikolaischule celebrated its 500th anniversary.
