The Anton-Philipp-Reclam-Schule is a grammar school in the Mitte district of Leipzig . The Anton-Philipp-Reclam-Schule is a general high school, which leads to a general higher education entrance qualification in an eight-year course after successfully attending the upper level and having passed the Saxon central high school diploma .

As one of two grammar schools in Saxony , the "Reclam" has been offering in-depth language (bilingual) training in French since 1993. In addition, the school has a regular linguistic and scientific profile. Common to all courses is the preferred second foreign language French; From year 5 onwards you learn the two languages English and French in parallel at Reclam. In the bilingual and regular language profile, students from grade 8 take either Spanish or Italian as a compulsory third foreign language. From grade 9 onwards, a Latin study group is offered for all pupils, which prepares them for the examination to acquire the Latinum if they have attended up to the upper level.

The advanced courses in the upper level include mathematics, German, French, English, history, biology and physics. Through cooperation agreements with other secondary schools in Leipzig (Kant-Gymnasium, Ostwald-Gymnasium) it is also possible to take an advanced course in chemistry, music or art (alternating between the years at the Reclam and at the partner school). At the moment around 1000 students are taught by 90 teachers at the school.

Bilingual education

Since 1993, the Reclam-Gymnasium has been offering a bilingual (bilingual) German-French education as one of two Saxon schools. This extends over eight years. In addition to the educational recommendation for the grammar school, the prerequisite for admission to the bilingual branch is the passing of a written and oral entrance examination, in which the general language skills of the candidate are checked.

At the start of grade 5, the student in the bilingual branch learns two foreign languages, English and French, in parallel, with French lessons being intensified (five hours per week). From year 7 onwards, geography is taught in French. The focus is on the subject and the student is always allowed to express himself in German. However, he is encouraged to use French increasingly. The teaching materials are written in the target language, the papers are written in the target language.

From year 9 onwards, history is taught in French.

In the upper secondary school level, the “Bilis” take a French advanced course which concludes with the central written advanced course examination. In addition, an interdisciplinary, bilingual basic course histoire-geographie (history-geography) can be taken, which focuses on the recent French national history and the analysis of geopolitical issues, above all the chronology of Franco-German relations and their effects on the history of Europe. Since 2004, the "Bilis" have been able to take a third, oral examination, a bilingual history course. This combines a normal basic course in German national history (3 hours per week) with the above-mentioned French course in histoire-geography (2 hours per week). This truly bilingual advanced history course concludes with an oral Abitur examination in French. Students are also tested in French in French literature.

Upon successful completion of the bilingual training, the pupils received the “ Certificate of in-depth language training ” up to the school year 2008/2009 , which documented the specifics of the course. Since the 2009/2010 school year, after successfully completing all bilingual subjects and examinations, students have acquired the French Baccalauréat in addition to the Saxon Abitur .

The special features of bilingual education at Reclam-Gymnasium include:

  • project-based exchange programs with French partner schools (grades 7, 9 and 11). There has been a long-term cooperation with the Collège Louise de Savoie and the Lycée Vaugelas in Chambéry , France .
  • a French theater company
  • close cooperation with French companies in the region (Veolia Wasser GmbH, Novotel Leipzig) and with the Institut français in Leipzig (internships, library use)
  • Study trips to France (grades 11 and 12) to conduct historical-geographical studies
  • the opportunity to work in working groups to prepare for the exams to acquire the DELF / DALF diplomas recognized throughout the French-speaking world
  • Saxon representative of the " 20 plus " project, which combines French, history and computer science. The focus here is on bilingual work and trying out new forms of work and teaching (several weeks of student-centered and independent work on larger project topics, Internet research, project presentation using Power Point, etc.)
  • participation in the nomination of the youth book award " Prix des lycéens allemands ". For this purpose, current youth books are read and discussed in the original French. The favorite will then be defended at the federal level.

The numerous and extremely successful participation, especially (but not only) of the bilingual students in the individual and group competition of the Federal Foreign Language Competition has become a matter of course.

International cooperation

The great variety and number of its international connections has always been part of the Reclam Gymnasium's self-image. The school currently maintains eleven international contacts to partner schools in six countries ( France , Italy , USA , Slovakia , Israel , Switzerland ). The focus is on bi- and tri-national project exchanges, which combine getting to know other cultures and deepening the acquired language skills with professional work in multinational school teams. An example of this is the Socrates project, which has existed since 1994, in the framework of which Reclam students of the natural science (!) Branch work with their Dutch and Italian partners on scientific questions and carry out ecological studies (working language English). Every Reclamian therefore has the opportunity to use his language skills while he is still at school and to gain international experience that goes far beyond tourist sightseeing.

School history

On May 5, 1834, the first secondary school in Saxony with 25 students was founded in the Moritzbastei building . The interest of the Leipzig bourgeoisie in a modern education for their sons soon grew, so that on October 11, 1873 the school had to move into a house on Sidonienstraße (today Paul-Gruner-Straße). In 1884 it was converted into a nine-year high school on the basis of new legal provisions. The mayors Carl Bruno Tröndlin and Erich Zeigner as well as the painter Max Klinger were among the 4872 students who had attended the school by then . Soon another move to a building between the Floßplatz and today's Karl-Liebknecht-Straße became necessary. Since this building was in the area of the St. Petri community, the then Oberrealschule was given the name " Petri-Schule " in 1907 by the City Council of Leipzig . The school building was partially destroyed in the Second World War.

After 1945 girls were also allowed to attend this school, from 1949 only grades 9–12 were taught science and language orientation. In 1959 the school was named " Georgi Dimitroff " and from 1965 onwards it made a name for itself as an extended secondary school with modern language teaching and the like. a. also in Spanish and Italian. Six years later the company moved to Tarostraße. The Anton-Philipp-Reclam-Gymnasium can also build on traditions that are closely connected with the sports city of Leipzig. Some of the students and teachers belonged to the 2nd children's and youth sports school in Brüderstraße until 1992. The members of the Leipzig Gewandhaus children and youth choir also received their training in Brüderstraße.

After the end of the GDR , in addition to questions of content and method, the name of the school was of course up for discussion. After many discussions and disputes, the name " Anton Philipp Reclam ", which was officially given in early 1992, was favored in one election . With the re-establishment of grammar schools in the Free State of Saxony in 1992, the 2nd Children's and Youth Sports School Leipzig and the Anton-Philipp-Reclam-School were combined under the name of the latter. The neighboring school building was integrated to ensure school operations. In 1993 the Anton-Philipp-Reclam-Gymnasium received the status of a so-called “§4-Gymnasium” (high school with in-depth training according to §4 of the school regulations for high schools of the Free State of Saxony) with the establishment of the bilingual French branch, one of four such high schools in Leipzig.

Both school buildings have a total of 46 classrooms and all the necessary specialist classrooms. One of the buildings was completely renovated in 2004, is now handicapped accessible and has two state-of-the-art IT cabinets with 12 workstations each including internet access, two state-of-the-art chemistry laboratories, specialist rooms for physics, biology and music, and a Center de documentation et d'information (CDI) based on the French model and a multimedia recording studio for the production of audio contributions for competitions, the school radio and language lessons. The book inventory of the school library, which also serves as a work space, is constantly updated and expanded. There are currently over 10,000 books, including almost all (bilingual) classics of the “Reclam series” and a large number of foreign-language works, available for use and loan. The school grounds are generously laid out with relaxation areas, a lawn for sunbathing and sitting, and a campfire site. A gym, swimming pool and sports field in the immediate vicinity complete the school complex. This is located in a quiet, child-friendly area in the immediate vicinity of the “Messemagistrale” community center and the Franco-German kindergarten.
