Federal foreign language competition

The Federal Foreign Language Competition is a nationwide competition in Germany for students in grades 6 to 13 and trainees. It consists of several sub-competitions; Currently (2019) there are the categories SOLO (grades 8 to 10), SOLO PLUS (from grade 10), TEAM (groups from grades 6 to 10) and TEAM BERUF (trainees in initial vocational training and students at vocational schools).

In the Solo category , English, French, Danish, Italian, Latin, Russian, Spanish and Ancient Greek are permitted as foreign languages , one of which must be selected. Several participants will be proposed for the language tournament by the state commissioners. The state competition awards cash prizes, the language tournament cash and material prizes as well as language trips.

There are two languages ​​to choose from in the Solo Plus category . English, French, Italian, Latin, Russian, Spanish and ancient Greek are permitted as the first languages ​​and, in addition to the languages ​​already mentioned, Chinese, Danish, Japanese, Dutch, Polish, Portuguese, Czech and Turkish are also permitted as second languages. This competition category is divided into a total of three levels. In the third round, a third and fourth language can be added. The main prize in the third stage is acceptance into the German National Academic Foundation .

In the Team School category (three to a maximum of ten participants in grades 6-10), participants can take part in all foreign languages ​​that are taught in Germany, including Latin and ancient Greek. The prizes are cash and material prizes at the state level. The country representatives also invite the best teams from all countries to the language festival, where they compete against each other again.

In the category team work for trainees in the initial vocational training and students of vocational schools (up to 27 years of age) the languages ​​can be freely chosen. Teams with two to eight members can take part. In this category, the topic can be chosen freely, but it must clearly relate to the professional world. There are cash prizes, and the best teams from the countries compete against each other in a second round, the trainee tournament.

Restrictions on the choice of languages

There are restrictions in the choice of languages ​​within the specified language requirements. For example, German, artificial and planned languages ​​are not permitted in either team category . In addition, in both team categories and as the first language in the solo categories, languages ​​cannot be selected under certain conditions - if the language is spoken regularly in the family, if it was learned during a stay abroad of more than one year, if the Is the language of your own school (e.g. a French school in Germany) or if you are attending a German school abroad . In addition, Latin and Ancient Greek cannot be selected in combination as first and second foreign languages ​​in the Solo plus category.

Organization, funding, patron

The competition was founded in 1979 by the Donors' Association for German Science and is now organized by the Education & Talent initiative . It is financed by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research and the Stifterverband. The Federal President is the patron of Education & Talent . Bernhard Sicking is the current managing director of the Bonn office.

Legal

With the submission of the work, ownership of the work is transferred to Bildung & Begabung gGmbH as the legal entity of the competition.
