The language of instruction is English. A special support program is offered to students learning English as a foreign language. German lessons are an integral part of the curriculum from preschool, with native and foreign speakers being taught separately. The German lessons follow the Saxon curriculum. From the 6th grade onwards, Spanish or French are offered as additional foreign languages.

In addition, all students are supported by learning aids as well as social and psychological advice. Two school nurses provide first aid and health education.

The Primary School teaches according to the English national curriculum, which has been adapted for international students. Mathematics, language / literature and natural sciences follow the British International Primary Curriculum .

The Secondary School prepares students for various school-leaving qualifications. At the end of grade 10, the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) is acquired; this qualification is recognized in Germany as a secondary school qualification . From the 11th grade onwards, students are prepared for the international Abitur. In Grade 12, students can choose to either take the International Baccalaureate Diploma (IB Diploma) or the US High School Diploma . The IB Diploma is a globally recognized higher education entrance qualification and entitles you to study in Germany and abroad.

There is no cancellation of lessons at the school as we work with qualified substitute teachers. Nursery and kindergarten (Nursery / Early Years) open daily from 07:00 to 18:00. The school day starts at 8:30 a.m. and ends at 3 p.m. In secondary school, the school day starts at 8:15 a.m. and ends at 4 p.m. After school supervision for primary school pupils is offered between 07:00 and 08:30 and after school from 15:00 to 17:00.

The school endeavors to limit class sizes to a maximum of 20 students. Specialized classes or electives in secondary are correspondingly smaller.

history

The former sponsoring association of the Leipzig International School was founded on April 21, 1992. In August 1992 the school started teaching with only 6 students and three teachers.

In 1994 the school comprised grades 1 to 5 and had 25 pupils; it was recognized as a primary school by the Saxon Ministry of Culture . In order to be able to accommodate the constantly growing number of pupils, the facility moved to the 55th school building in Ratzelstrasse 26 in Leipzig- Kleinzschocher in 1995 , grade 6 was added and the number of pupils rose to 40. In the same year, the Leipzig International School became Recognized by the city of Leipzig as a "provider of free youth welfare". With the start of grades 7 in 1996 and 8 in 1997, there were 65 and 70 students respectively. In 1998 the International General Certificate of Secondary Education was introduced in grade 9. In 2000 the International Baccalaureate Diploma followed in the 11th grade. The number of students had now risen to 75.

After moving to the school building, which is still in use today, in 2001 there were three preschool groups. The number of students had grown to 120, in the 12th grade the first 5 graduates with IB Diploma could leave the school. The number of pupils rose in the 2002/2003 school years to 220, 2003/2004 to 310 and 2004/2005 to 350. The pre-school could be expanded to 6 preschool groups. In 2007, 440 students were studying in the renovated school.

In 2012 the school received accreditation from the Council of International Schools (CIS). In 2014 the newly built Leipzig International Kindergarten opened as an international day care center.

building

The newly founded school had its first rooms in 1992 at Kirschbergstrasse 48 in Leipzig-Möckern .

In 2001 the school moved into the extensively renovated building of the former Carl Goerdeler Grammar School. The building at Könneritzstraße 47 was inaugurated in 1891 as the first Schleußiger school building. Later it was used by the 26th district school, the XV. Citizen school and the 48th elementary school (most recently 48th POSMaurice Thorez ”).

Due to extensive renovation work, the school temporarily moved to Löbauer Straße 46 in Leipzig- Schönefeld in June 2006 , until it moved into the building, which was renovated for 13.8 million euros (of which 8.5 million euros in funding from the Free State of Saxony) in October 2007 the Konneritzstrasse could return. In place of the old gymnasium, a lower-lying multi-purpose building with a roof that can be walked on was built according to the plans of the architects Fuchshuber & Partner, which contains a sports and event hall as well as classrooms.

Since August 2014, the Leipzig International Kindergarten for early learning in kindergarten and crèche has been in operation at Karl-Heine-Straße 95 on Karl-Heine-Kanal in Leipzig-Plagwitz . The kindergarten offers a full-day program for children from 1 to 6 years of age, which promotes child development in an internationally oriented environment.
