Schleußig is a district of the Saxon city of Leipzig . Until its incorporation in 1891, the place was an independent municipality. Today Schleußig is a district in the south-west of Leipzig according to the municipal structure of Leipzig .

Location and local characteristics

Schleußig is about two kilometers southwest of the city center . In addition to the Schleußig district, the district also includes part of the Leipzig district with the forest section Die Nun, as well as small areas of Großzschocher and Connewitz , while a small part of the Schleußig district is in the Kleinzschocher district . In addition, the districts of Lindenau and Plagwitz are adjacent.

In the east the Elster flood bed and in the west the river course of the White Elster form the boundary of the district. Schleußig is the only district in Leipzig that is almost completely enclosed by waterways and can therefore only be reached via bridges. Accordingly, it is endangered by floods. Significant parts of the district area were last flooded in July 1954 by the flooding of the white Elster.

The largely closed Wilhelminian style development, the proximity to local recreation areas such as the Volkspark Kleinzschocher , the Clara-Zetkin-Park , the Leipziger Auwald or Cospudener See as well as the city center make Schleußig an attractive residential area that is particularly valued by students and young families.

history

Schleußig was first mentioned in 1376 as Slizzig . For centuries it remained a small Vorwerk on a hill between the White Elster and the Rödel , a now filled tributary. In 1744 50 people lived here. In 1835 Schleußig, which at that time had 101 inhabitants, received the status of an independent rural community . Schleußig belonged to the Electoral Saxon or Royal Saxon District Office in Leipzig until 1856 . Then it came to the Leipzig II court office in 1856 and to the Leipzig District Administration in 1875 . On January 1, 1891, it was finally incorporated into Leipzig . At that time it had 1,437 inhabitants.

The Schleußig estate in 1898

In 1872 the Leipzig merchant Bernhard Hüffer acquired the Schleußig estate in order to develop the surrounding arable and meadow land with a total area of 129 hectares as building land close to the city. As early as 1860, he planned to build a brick factory on Schleußiger Flur. Another measure in 1873 was the draft of a plan for the construction of a flood protection dam along the White Elster, which represented the western border of the intended construction area.

In 1876, Hüffer, together with the lawyer and entrepreneur Carl Heine , who owned land north of the Hüfferschen holdings (Neu-Schleußig), submitted a development plan for Schleußig, which was approved by the administration of the Leipzig District Administration. The Planteil Heines was north and the Hüffers south of Rödelstrasse.

In the northern part with the Könneritzstraße as the main thoroughfare, four-storey residential buildings in closed construction were planned on streets oriented at right angles , while in the southern part of Hüfferer's Pistoriusstraße slightly curved side streets were planned with smaller buildings in the open construction method .

The Bethanienkirche

Because of Schleußig's low altitude, major problems arose with the installation of the sewage locks and the associated very slow construction process. In 1887, only 24 plots of three to four-story residential buildings were built on Heine's area, and only ten villa-like one to two-story residential houses were built in Hüffer's part in 1904, the year he died. It was not until 1914 that the infrastructure, especially in the southern part, was considered to have been developed, the roads were paved and sluiced, gas and electrical supplies and central water supply were introduced.

Schleußig was parish in Kleinzschocher until 1906. As early as 1892, services were held in alternative quarters and an interim church in the Schleußig area. In 1907 a parish of its own was founded in Schleußig. The construction of the church was delayed by the First World War , so that the modern Bethanienkirche in Stieglitzstraße could not be inaugurated until 1933 .

Population and statistics

The population structure clearly stands out from the Leipzig average in several points. The average age is quite young at 36 years, the age group of 30 to 45 year olds is clearly overrepresented with 31.4%, as is children under 15 with 20.4%. At 16%, the proportion of students is also above the Leipzig average, while the proportion of senior citizens is low at 10.5%. The proportion of academics is the highest among all Leipzig districts: 81% of the residents have a high school diploma, 59% have a university or college degree, and a further 12% have a technical college degree.

At 1,684 euros per person or 2,269 euros per household, the net income is significantly above the median of the city of Leipzig. Only 6% of households earn their living mainly from unemployment benefits, significantly less than the Leipzig average. The crime rate of 92 registered crimes per 1000 inhabitants is well below the urban average. The car quota is also rather low with 297 vehicles per 1000 inhabitants. A majority of Schleussiger states that they go shopping, during their leisure time or into the city center mainly by bicycle or on foot; Only on the way to work are mostly cars or public transport used.

Schleußig is one of the districts with the highest voter turnout in Leipzig: 88% of Schleußigers who were eligible to vote took part in the 2017 federal elections , and 82.6% in the 2019 state elections . The Greens in Schleußig regularly do significantly better than the Leipzig average, in the 2017 Bundestag election they received 19.4% of the vote, and in the 2019 state election even 33.2%. The AfD , on the other hand, is noticeably weaker than the city-wide average (2017: 8.8%; 2019: 7.4%).

Infrastructure

schools

Schleußig is home to the municipal school am Auwald (primary school) and the Leipzig International School operated by a GmbH , which offers education in English from kindergarten to high school.

traffic

The main roads are the Könneritzstraße in north-south direction and Rödelstraße / Schleußiger Weg in east-west direction. There is a large discrepancy in Schleußig between the demand for and the supply of parking space.

Schleußig is connected to the city center by tram lines 1 and 2 . By bus number 60 , there is also a public transport connection to Plagwitz and Lindenau and in the Südvorstadt and from there via the Bayerischer Bahnhof further into the East Leipzig. In 2010, line 74 was extended to improve the connection between Schleußig and the Leipzig bus network and now offers connections to Südvorstadt, Stötteritz and Lindenauer Markt.

Sports

In addition to the facilities at the stadium, the construction workers of the Leipziger Sport-Club 1901 eV and the Nonnenwiese sports field of SV Schleußig 1990 eV, the Clara-Zetkin-Park leisure sports center and two canoe rental stations are available.
