Bernhard Ludwig Josef Hüffer (born February 8, 1824 in Stromberg ; † November 18, 1904 in Leipzig ) was a businessman who made a significant contribution to the development of Leipzig's southern suburb and the Schleußig district .

Life

In 1854, thirty-year-old Hüffer founded a consignment and wholesaling business in downtown Leipzig, which was supplemented five years later by a wool trade, combined with the move to Zeitzer Strasse.

In 1860 he financed the construction of a modern brick kiln on the Brandvorwerk ( ) , acquired the Brandvorwerk himself in 1862, submitted a development plan for the associated property in 1863 and thus marked the start of development in Leipzig's southern suburb .

Also in 1860 he founded a brick factory on Schleußiger Flur ( ) with the intention of building work there later. In 1865 he bought a spinning mill in Neukirchen .

In 1872 he bought the Schleußig estate ( ) in order to develop the surrounding arable and meadow land, a total of 129 hectares, as building land close to the city. A first measure to this was the draft of a plan in 1873 for the construction of a flood protection dam along the White Elster , which represented the western border of the intended construction area.

In 1876, Hüffer and the lawyer and entrepreneur Carl Heine submitted a development plan for Schleußig, which was approved by the administration of the Leipzig District Administration . The Planteil Heines was north and the Hüffers south of Rödelstrasse.

In the northern part with the Könneritzstraße as the main thoroughfare, four-story residential buildings in closed construction were planned on streets oriented at right angles , while in Hüffer's southern part slightly curved side streets were planned with smaller buildings in the open construction method .

Because of Schleußig's low altitude, major problems arose with the installation of the sewage locks and the associated very slow construction process. In 1887, only 24 plots of three to four-story residential buildings were built on Heine's area, and only ten villa-like one to two-story residential houses were built in Hüffer's part in 1904, the year he died. It was not until 1914 that the infrastructure, especially in the southern part, was considered to have been developed, the roads were paved and sluiced, gas and electrical supplies and central water supply were introduced.

Honor

In 1935, a street in Schleußig near the former brick factory was named Hüfferstraße for Schleußig for the services of Bernhard Hüffers .
