history

Neuschönefeld on a plan from 1860

As the population of Leipzig began to increase in the middle of the 19th century, new building land was necessary. With the construction of the Leipzig – Dresden railway line , which initially ran along today's railway road, the southern parts of the Schönefeld manor were difficult to reach. For this reason, as early as 1831, a twelve- hectare area south of the future route, the later Neuschönefeld corridor, was cleared for construction speculation.

Construction began in 1838. As early as 1843, 15 houses were built in the Schönefeld annex, as the area was first called, or Colonie Eberstein (after the owner of the Schönefeld estate). They were apartment buildings intended for workers in perimeter block development , each with five to six small apartments without comfort. The small size of the property hardly allowed any business in the backyards. There were only a few businesses: between 1859 and 1892 a machine factory, a perfume and soap factory, a piano factory and a machine tool factory were established.

In 1845 the state government granted the application to use the name Neuschönefeld and to elect a local council. In 1846 the first school building was built, which was expanded several times in later years, in 1855 a poor house . Neuschönefeld never owned a church and was parish to Schönefeld until the Neustadt church was built.

Street lighting with used lamps from Leipzig was given to Neuschönefeld in 1862. In 1872 the sewage lock system was completed, the development was almost complete, and Neuschönefeld had 5557 inhabitants. In 1882 Neuschönefeld was given a horse-drawn tram connection over the Eisenbahnstraße, which was created in place of the railway line that was moved north in 1879. In 1896 the horse-drawn railway line was electrified.

Typical picture in Neuschönefeld before the demolition of the area, Melchiorstraße (1975)

In January 1890 Neuschönefeld was incorporated into Leipzig together with its neighboring communities Neustadt and Volkmarsdorf .

In the Second World War , relatively little was destroyed in Neuschönefeld. But after 1945 structural neglect of the Wilhelminian style residential quarters in the east of Leipzig began. The city of Leipzig tried around 1975 with the so-called example planning Ostvorstadt through redevelopment and new building measures to revalue the area and to counteract the migration of the population. However, it remained with individual measures. Instead, large-scale demolition of residential buildings and the construction of the Rabet amusement park took place in Neuschönefeld. When the park was redesigned in the early 2000s, more houses were demolished. Martha-, Thümmel-, Melchior-, Rosen-, Reinhart- and Otto-Runki-Straße have been completely abolished, so that in Neuschönefeld, which previously had no green areas, most of it is parkland today. Of the former 240 residential buildings in Neuschönefeld, only 30 are still standing today.
