The village, located on a slight hill north of the fertile floodplains of the Rietzschke , emerged as a Sorbian round village in the 9th century . German settlers were added during the 12th century. The first written mention of the place under the name Schtynsch dates from 1335. In the following time the place names changed from Stintsch (1350) to Stinczs (1378), Stuanczs (1381), Stintz (1496) and Schischtz (1551). In 1551, around 80 people lived in the village belonging to the Dölitz manor .

During the Battle of Nations in October 1813, both the population and the structure of Stünz were affected. On the night of October 18-19, 1813, the Prussian Landwehr under Major Carl Friccius rested in the place where the Stünzer pond was later laid out before the storming of Leipzig. The Apelstein No. 43 reminds us of this today . Just one year later, the damage was largely repaired. The place now had 180 inhabitants in 18 houses. Until 1856, Stünz was part of the electoral or royal Saxon district office of Leipzig . From 1856 the place belonged to the court office Leipzig I and from 1875 to the administrative authority of Leipzig .

The city council of Leipzig decided in 1892 to purchase land on the Stünzer Flur in order to create a park. In the eleven-hectare site of the municipal garden director emerged in subsequent years according to plans Otto Wittenberg of people grove Stünz , which was inaugurated on 16 September 1898 and as today Stünzer Park is known.

On January 1, 1910, Stünz with its 3200 inhabitants was incorporated into Leipzig. Since the municipal subdivision in 1992, Stünz has largely belonged to the Sellerhausen-Stünz district in the east district. The south of the Rietzschke located part of the district Stünz (with the Volkshain Stünz) was attached to the district Anger-Crottendorf , the northeastern part (beyond the Theodor-Heuss-Straße and the railway line Leipzig-Geithain ) was assigned to the district Paunsdorf .
