The Volkshain Stünz (often also Stünzer Park ) is a green area in the east of Leipzig . It was created at the end of the 19th century when the site did not yet belong to the city of Leipzig.

Location and layout

The 11 hectare park is located south of the village and on the corridor of the former village of Stünz , which is now a district of Leipzig. Since the municipal division of the city in 1992, the park area has been part of the Anger-Crottendorf district .

The park is bordered in the east and north by the river of the Ostliche Rietzschke , in the west by the embankment of the Engelsdorf – Connewitz railway line (formerly part of the Leipziger Güterring ) and in the south by several allotment garden associations.

The park contains wide meadows as well as groups of trees and individual trees. The paths are generously curved, except for the main avenue leading in a straight line towards Mölkau and the plum avenue in a north-south direction. In the western part there is a 9500 m² pond. Next to the pond is the Apelstein No. 43. It reminds us that a battalion of the East Prussian Landwehr stopped here for the last time before the storm on Leipzig during the Leipzig Battle of the Nations . In the eastern part there is a boules court and a children's playground with a climbing combination and sand play area (formerly a paddling pool).

Most of the trees come from the early days of the park. There are red and copper beeches , Norway and sycamore maples , black alder and various types of linden . A rare peculiarity is the white oak with irregularly lobed leaves that turn wine-red in autumn. There are no flower plantations, but in spring numerous different early bloomers bloom in the meadows .

Numerous birds, such as the colt , cuckoo , middle woodpecker and chaffinch , can be found; Common toads , pond and grass frogs live at the pond . The pond is a fishing water with the main fish species pike , carp and tench .

history

With the strong increase in Leipzig's population in the 1880s, the desire arose to have more green spaces available for local recreation in the eastern districts as well. A resolution by the city council on May 7, 1892 on the development plan for Stünz also included the demand for a park. At the suggestion of Lord Mayor Otto Georgi (1831-1918) and City Garden Director Otto Wittenberg (1834-1918), the Stünzer site was selected in 1894, and in 1896 Wittenberg's concrete plans were available. After the necessary land acquisition, work began in 1897, which was completed in 1898, so that the park could be officially opened on September 16, 1898. Because of the rush that soon set in, a parking attendant equipped with police force was used. After the incorporation of Stünz in 1910, the park now also belonged to the Leipzig area. Its original design has largely been preserved.
