The Seongsu Bridge ( 성수 대교 Seongsu-daegyo ) is a road bridge in Seoul over the Hangang and connects the districts of Seongdong and Gangnam .

It was erected from April 1977 by Dong Ah Construction Industrial Company in steel frame construction with reinforced concrete pillars and completed in October 1979.

The crashed section in the river

The bridge collapsed on October 21, 1994 at 7:40 a.m. An incorrect welding process resulted in a structural failure of the construction, causing a 48 m wide section to fall 17 meters deep into the river. A bus, a delivery van and two cars were torn down, killing 32 people and injuring 17. Numerous smaller civilian boats also took part in the search in the river, which was made more difficult by rain and wind. Because of the seasonal shallow water depth, the section did not completely sink into the river, but remained visible.

At first a repair was considered, but this turned out to be impracticable due to the deficiencies in the construction and construction. Therefore, building the bridge from scratch was the only option.

Construction began on April 26, 1995 and was carried out by Hyundai Construction . In addition to the stiffeners that can absorb the transverse loads, the concrete deck was replaced by steel plates, which reduce the overall weight of the bridge. In addition, the number of lanes has been increased from four to eight. All construction work was completed on August 15, 1997.

The collapse of the Seongsu Bridge was not the only bridge collapse in South Korea: a total of eight bridges, including three in the Seoul area, have collapsed since 1970. In most cases, the reason was that speed was preferred to safety.
