The place was founded in the 12th century by settlers from Flanders . The first documentary mention of the settlement then called Balduwinesdorp comes from the year 1213, when Margrave Dietrich von Meißen donated the village to the Augustinian canons of St. Thomas in Leipzig.

In the 13th century, a massive choir tower church was built around the small wooden church that had existed until then. The murals she made in 1420 were uncovered in 1958. Baalsdorf belonged to the Duchy of Saxony from 1485. After the dissolution of the Thomas monastery in the course of secularization , the place was placed under the rule of the Leipzig council in 1543. He sold it to Johann Ponickau in 1641 for the purpose of paying off debts, whose heirs remained Lords of Baalsdorf until 1781. Then there were numerous changes of ownership. In 1806 a windmill was built on the road to Holzhausen , which was demolished in 1904.

During the Battle of Nations in October 1813, Baalsdorf was also badly affected. The French troops occupied the place from October 14th to 18th, 1813 and looted it. The village was then occupied by Russian and Austrian troops and looted again. Until 1856, Baalsdorf was part of the Electoral Saxon or Royal Saxon District Office in Leipzig . From 1856 the place belonged to the court office Leipzig I and from 1875 to the administrative authority of Leipzig .

In 1838 there were around 180 people living in Baalsdorf. The size of the Baalsdorfer Flur was approx. 390 hectares. The place was initially spared from the industrialization that started in the middle of the 19th century. Only around 1900 were two steam brick factories built. However, one of the companies had to be closed again in 1908 because groundwater penetrated the clay pit. It was used as a lake and family pool from June 1, 1913, which existed until the end of the Second World War . After the end of the war, production in the remaining steam brick, which had developed into the town's leading employer, was also discontinued.

In 1946 there were around 1100 inhabitants in Baalsdorf. An agricultural machine station and a horse breeding association were established by 1948. The LPG , formed in 1952, built an extensive poultry farm in the 1960s.

From 1991 to 1994 an industrial park was built east of the Angers on Baalsdorfer Flur. On July 1, 1995, Baalsdorf was initially incorporated into Engelsdorf . Together with this it was incorporated into Leipzig on January 1, 1999.
