Neustadt-Neuschönefeld is a district in the east of Leipzig .

location

Neustadt-Neuschönefeld is about two kilometers in an east-northeast direction from the center of Leipzig. It borders in the west and north on the district center-east, in the east on Volkmarsdorf and Anger-Crottendorf and in the south on Reudnitz-Thonberg .

The bounding streets are Ludwig-Erhard-Straße in the west, Rosa-Luxemburg-Straße in the northwest, Hermann-Liebmann- and Wurzner-Straße in the east and Dresdner Straße in the south.

The main traffic and business street is the Eisenbahnstraße, which also forms the border between the historic districts of Neustadt (north) and Neuschönefeld (south). The Neustädter Markt with the Holy Cross Church , which was built in 1893/1894 according to plans by the architect Paul Lange (1853–1932), can be regarded as a certain district center .

history

The once independent municipalities of Neustadt and Neuschönefeld emerged during the population boom in the 19th century, both were incorporated into Leipzig in 1890.

The district of Neustadt-Neuschönefeld was created on March 18, 1992 by resolution of the city council, when the new municipal structure of the city was introduced and the most even distribution of the number of residents among the districts was taken into account as a classification criterion. It includes the historical districts ( districts ) Neustadt and Neuschönefeld completely, the part of Reudnitz north of Dresdner Straße and a small part of the Volkmarsdorfer Flur in the east and a narrow strip of the old Leipzig Flur in the north. Although "Reudnitz" is not mentioned in the name of the district, it includes the former core of the village of Reudnitz on what is now Kohlgartenstrasse as well as the former locations of the Reudnitz town hall and St. Mark's Church .

The population fell sharply in the 1990s and developed even more negatively than in Leipzig as a whole: between 1991 and 2000 it fell by almost 30 percent. Since the beginning of the 21st century, the population of the district has been increasing again: Between 2000 and 2019, the population increased from 7,992 to 13,148.

Location characteristics

Neustadt-Neuschönefeld is predominantly residential area , only the westernmost strip on Ludwig-Erhardt-Straße and a small area at the intersection of Hermann-Liebmann- / Eisenbahnstraße (with the Aldi market) are designated as mixed building space (residential and commercial). Built as a working-class residential area in the Wilhelminian era , Neustadt-Neuschönefeld consists almost exclusively of mostly renovated old apartment buildings in block perimeter development . There are a variety of retail shops and restaurants along the Eisenbahnstraße.

In terms of green space, it has the Rabet district park in Neuschönefeld, which makes up more than ten percent of the area of the district and for which large-scale dilapidated residential buildings were demolished in the 1970s, as well as Elsapark and Bernhardiplatz in the former Reudnitz part.

Neustadt-Neuschönefeld is the most densely populated district of the city. Further particularities are the very high proportion of residents with a migration background (36.2%) for Leipzig and the far disproportionate proportion of 20 to 35-year-olds (44%) compared to the city as a whole. The average age is very young at 34.8 years. The proportion of recipients of social benefits is also well above the Leipzig average. The now very high proportion of students (2013: 24%) has decreased somewhat (2017: 19%), but is still above average. On the other hand, the proportion of older residents (less than 10% of the population is over 65 years of age) and the car quota (only 188 private vehicles per 1000 inhabitants) are noticeably low. A majority of the residents say that they do most of the trips on foot or by bike.

In 2017, Neustadt-Neuschönefeld counted 187 crimes per 1000 inhabitants (the average for Leipzig is 139), most of them thefts. The Eisenbahnstraße and its side streets (up to Mariannenstraße in the north and Rabet in the south) are considered to be the focus of crime. According to the security authorities, the Rabet district park is a transshipment point for all kinds of narcotics. The Leipzig Police Department declared the area a gun ban zone in November 2018 (i.e. the carrying of weapons and other dangerous objects that are legal under the Gun Act is prohibited there).

traffic

The main traffic artery is the railway road running in a west-east direction, on which tram lines 1, 3 and 8 run. Bus routes 72/73 run on Kohlgartenstrasse, which runs diagonally through the southern part of the district (a tram route is available here as an alternative route, but no regular service). The busy Dresdner Strasse with tram lines 4 and 7 runs along the southern edge of the district. Bus route 70 runs on Hermann-Liebmann-Strasse, which is the eastern border of the district (the former tram line has been completely shut down here).
