In Elsapark (2016)

The Elsapark is a small green area in Leipzig district Neustadt-Neuschönefeld in the district East.

Location and shape

The Elsapark borders on Elsastraße, Lutherstraße and Rabet. The Rabet district park is on the other side of the street . In addition to these streets, it also has access from Konstantinstrasse. It extends in a northeast-southwest direction over an area of 1.7 hectares. The Eastern Rietzschke used to run along its north-eastern edge . This makes it one of the few undeveloped parts of the Rietzschkeaue, where the “cabbage garden villages” responsible for supplying Leipzig's vegetables were formerly located. Because of the low terrain, some entrances lead via open stairs.

Some of the old trees in the park date from the time it was built. The current structure and the routes result from later redesigns. A large lawn for sunbathing takes up the area of a former pond. In the south-western part there is a children's playground with a climbing tower, slide and a sand play area. A table tennis table and a basketball field complete the offer.

history

The Schwabe Villa (2016)

In 1879 the Leipzig pharmacist and owner of the homeopathic central pharmacy at Thomaskirchhof Willmar Schwabe (1839–1917) acquired a large piece of land on Kohlgartenstrasse in the then still independent community of Reudnitz near Leipzig. Here he had a magnificent villa built as a family residence in 1880/1881. The associated garden of around two hectares was designed like a park. There were two ponds; in the larger one, over 40 meters in diameter, was an island of bushes and trees to which a bridge led to a pavilion. The smaller pond was overgrown with water lilies. An artificial hill served as a toboggan hill in winter. Arbors, an arbor covered with wine, a bark house and a large fountain were available. A tennis court made sport possible.

From 1887 to 1891 Schwabe had six five-story apartment buildings built on the northwest side of the property along Konstantinstrasse, which led to the reduction of the park. In 1939 the facility became public. In 1992, as a result of the municipal reorganization of Leipzig, Elsapark was assigned to the Neustadt-Neuschönefeld district. The park is a listed building .

Buildings on the southeast corner are not part of the park. The former Schwabe'sche Villa is used by a tax consultancy , patent attorneys and a trading company. A private institute for pathology has been located adjacent to the property since 1998 .
