As a neighboring lane a is AnliegerstraÑŠe denotes that immediately adjacent to the lane of a major road runs. The two lanes are usually structurally separated (for example by a green strip or a noise barrier ) and are usually separated or merged at important road crossings. The residential lane is used for development traffic and can be designated as a traffic-calmed area . There are also residential parking spaces there.

The advantage of this system is a separation of fast and slow traffic and the associated increase in traffic safety. However, this design is only possible if the space available is correspondingly large. For urban planning reasons, it is not always possible to set up a residential lane.

There are similar parallel lanes on expressways, where there may be an additional reason for tolls on the thoroughfare.
