Rolf Gundlach

Rolf Gundlach (born August 29, 1931 in Heldenbergen , † February 1, 2016 in Darmstadt ) was a German Egyptologist .

Life

He studied Egyptology and history in Hamburg and Heidelberg . After receiving his doctorate in 1959 under Eberhard Otto at the University of Heidelberg ( dissertation on the dating of hieroglyphic and hieratic inscriptions from the Wadi Hammamat ), he headed the Historical Science Association at the German Computer Center in Darmstadt from 1966 to 1971 . From 1972 to 1977 he was deputy head of the Institute for Non-Numerics in Darmstadt . From 1977 to 1982 he had teaching positions in Heidelberg (1977–1981), Mainz (1980–1982), Saarbrücken (1981). After his habilitation at the University of Heidelberg in 1981 ( The royal renewal temples of the 18th dynasty. Studies on the pre-Ramessid rock temples I ), he taught from 1981 to 1983 as a private lecturer in Egyptology at the University of Heidelberg. From 1982 to 1983 he was a deputy professor for Egyptology at the University of Mainz . From the winter semester 1983/1984 until his retirement in 1997 he taught as a university professor for Egyptology at the University of Mainz. From 1987 to 1989 he was Dean of Faculty 15: Philology III at the University of Mainz. As a spokesperson, he represented the Mainz Collaborative Research Center 295 Cultural and Linguistic Contacts from 1997 to 1998 . From 1997 to 2009 he regularly taught and supervised exam candidates at the University of Mainz. From 2001 to 2016 he was a board member of the Friends of Egyptology at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz e. V.
